Has anyone in London had a drink aboard of late? She is looking rather the worse for wear I'm afraid, with weeds/trees? growing out of her!

I understand she used to be nice for a drink but subsequent 'refits' not mentioned on her website have apparently been a bit tacky?

For those who don't know ts Queen Mary was built in 1933 but became Queen Mary II in 1935 to allow her name to be used for the Cunard liner Queen Mary. The 'II' was removed again once Cunard's Queen Mary was no longer on the register.
At one stage she also had a single funnel when converted to oil in 1957.

Few more pics here.

I was onboard December 2002 on a pre-QE2 crossing party. Many Liner's List members were onboard for a pre-celebration. It was fun, but the ts Queen Mary was even a little worse for wear back then.

I'm afraid I've long taken the view that a drink on the Queen Mary will inevitably be wrecked by one of two mutually exclusive things:-
(a) You have to wait 20 minutes to get served every time you want a drink because she's absolutely heaving with people enjoying a place to have a drink in the fresh air during nice weather; or
(b) You will freeze or drown to death.

She's only 5 minutes walk from my office and I have only been tempted on board twice in my entire life.

Yes Ernie, I remember that evening even if I was not one of the pre-QE2 crossers. Rather a lone post-Navigator of the Seas crosser!

If I were a tourist, whether or not I knew anything about her history, or was curious by the name "Queen Mary", if I arrived at the Embankment by ferry or excursion boat, seeing her in that condition, regardless of the appearance of her main entrance [which I didn't even bother to walk down and have a look at], even if I were gasping for a drink, I wouldn't go aboard. Just smacks of total neglect. She did not appear to have many people aboard either [I can see 4 on my aerial view].

On the otherhand, over the otherside of Hungerford Bridge, ss Tattershall Castle looks sparkling [OK she's not been back from refit for 3 months yet], and was busy.

Queen Mary certainly needs a spruce up, a bit of weed killer [environmentally friendly type, of course ] thrown over the railing & a bucket of soapy water with sponge would help!

Passed by the Queen Mary in a cab the other week and noticed that she's now got a blue colour all over her hull. It looked like she was still being worked on so I don't know if that's a final colour or just an interim one. But at least some work is being done.

(I mention a cab, because when I'm driving I don't get the chance to have a good look around!)

Globaliser have you been past recently? I was reading a comment this week, I think it must have been a letter in a real newspaper, as I can't find it online, where someone was bemoaning the awful blue of TS Queen Mary.

I have just remembered to go and look at their site and find this image

She looks white? Pretty awfully bright green decking... but is she really now blue? or was that an undercoat of sorts and she has returned to white. I must admit, asides from the green, she looks smart now in their photo.

It also appears she no longer has a daily open bar, just bookable for events?

Pam, on the web site it says the Ward Room is open daily:

Ward Room - Our everyday bar, perfect for chilling out or for casual eating, with access to the decks every day of the year.

We serve food from 12noon - 8pm every day.

I remember stumbling upon her one afternoon during my first trip to London back in the late '80s. I thought she was a great place to have a drink.

No I haven't been past, or rather haven't been past and looked recently. I will try to remember to do so. It wouldn't surprise me if the blue were an undercoat of some sort. It just didn't look right. The white is much better.

Did you make that photo in 2004 ? ?
I made a photo of the ship in June 2003 and she just looked the same, very rusty below the banner.

I think she has always been painted white with a lower dark grey or black hull portion. She has/had a very traditional livery of buff and black funnels, white upper decks and black/grey hull. The white in the photo with the green painted steel decks looks like a fresh fresh coat of paint. She looks much more inviting and 'festive'-perfect for a party/event ship IMO. Hopefully her owners kept the weeds growing out of her sides!

I'm afraid that as of this morning, she is still blue. I couldn't see down as far as where the weeds/trees were, so I don't know if they've been removed. (I was crossing Waterloo Bridge on a bus, so my vision was a bit restricted.)

A FISH [who thinks 'Lurker' sounds dodgy ] has reported that a week ago he visited ts Queen Mary after a long day at the office. I quote:-

"Several pints later, my colleagues found me discussing the correct colours for the ship, with a member of staff. Suffice to say, the owners are very pleased with the new colours and she won't be repainted any time soon. The present colours are very 'distinctive' apparently - although another member of staff thought it looked like camouflage. I did offer to repaint the upperworks white myself at some point, but, the disco had started by then and the staff were grooving to 80s dance classics."

What a shame... she is to remain looking as though the top coat never got done. A pint of Fosters is £2.35 aboard, so not bad for a bit of refreshment in London, if anyone is passing.

I drove past her last week and she had scaffolding up around her, and it looked like she was being painted. What I could see was white, so maybe the blue is going. I will report back as and when I get to see more.

She's now black and white - including the funnels. Although I couldn't see that much of her (bottom deck, wrong side of bus), what I could see looks crisp and clean. The funnels now have QM painted on as well.

A view from the upper deck: Even the trees have now been removed. She's looking much smarter, if also rather stark.

Thank you for the updates Globaliser, I will no doubt be down [up] sometime over the summer.

I was today however, sent a rather exceptional sketch of ts Queen Mary outlining her 'new' colour scheme. This drawing is destined for the Tate Modern and has never before been seen by the public; we on Cruisetalk are priviledged to be allowed this advance viewing; note the artistic quality and impressive ability of the artist to use a few lines to create a convincing three-dimensional scene.

Thanks to Anon.

Thinks she looks better with the two funnels Ernst... but love the hull art JSSN.. certainly enhances her appearance bringing the sketch into the C21 The artist may mature over time and add something similar of his own in the future.

...the hull art makes the picture somehow more suitable for the Wallace Collection and not so much the Tate Modern.

I'm sorry if I missed the news about this, but going over Waterloo Bridge on a bus this morning, it looked like there was something wrong with the riverscape - and a brief think revealed that the Queen Mary has gone.

A bit of digging reveals that she actually left in November 2009 (which shows just how observant I am in the mornings) - see this BBC story. It seems that she has, at least in part, become a victim of the crisis at Mitchells and Butler - but hopefully she will still have a future.

Although the Queen Mary was sold to be used in France she at present remains in Tilbury docks.
