It is possible that the ss Norway could be heading for Sembawang Ship Repair yard where we docked the ss Oriana every year while she was on the Australian Cruises if the report of her being seen off Changi airport is correct.
It was the old Royal Navy dry docks so should be able to take the ss Norway.
However bearing in mind Star Cruises is a Far East company they could have connections with the same breakers that destroyed the ss Oriana.
Although some pictures were obtained when the work on Oriana started I have been advised that the breakers yard is now a secure area and no more pictures will be available.
Even Farah on Dalian English News Service Runsky has not answered questions about ss Oriana for over three months which is since she arrived at the breakers yard.
After she was damaged in the typhoon and still in Dalian she was very happy to supply information on what was happening to the Oriana.
Having worked with Hong Kong Chinese crew on both the P&O's Chitral and Cathay it is a case of the Chinese not liking to loose face !
For those of you not familiar with this expression it means they will not tell you what is going on as what you expected to happen has not happened !
Just as I am still trying to find the latest information and some new pictures about ss Oriana being broken up you may have the same problems finding out what is happening to the ss Norway.
Regards to all
Bob

The Sembawang shipyard is located northern part of singapore, it lies the bank of the Selat Johore.
The Changi Airport is located eastern shore of the Singapore and the mouth of the Selat Johore.
In the Nineties, when i traveled on the ferry enroute from eastern shore of Malaysian hotel to Singapore, I have seen the Ocean Pearl have towed off the Changi Airport. She was passing thorugh the Selat Johore and heading toward to the West.

Cheers
Maybe she is been chartered to house some of the homeless in that area after all the flood damage to the villages and towns.
At Riau in Indonesia the Karimum Sembawang shipyard to have a floating dock for ships up to 65,000 dwt. which is 230 metres long, so she may have been taken there.

unless I am totally mistaken the "Indonesian area" information has been on the MTC for weeks if not months. And, well, Port Klang is in the "Indonesian area", although it isn't in Indonesia, of course.
Best,
Raoul
Having been into Port Swettenham which was the previous name for Port Klang on the old P&O passenger ships Chitral & Cathay.
The port is very close to Kaula Lumpur so I would class it as being in Malaysia.
You have a trip down the Straits of Malacca passing Singapore and into the Java Sea to get to Indonesia.
Regards,Bob
I'm aware of the fact that Port Klang is in Malaysia. Please re-read my posting as I did write it is not in Indonesia.

I'm sorry, but I don't agree. The Indonesian (Sumatra) coast is only a 100 km or so distance from Kuala Lumpur on the Western side of the Malacca Strait.
But then, the point of my posting was to say that I believe the MTC web site has been showing the "Indonesia area" info for weeks, if not months, so I don't think that we can draw any conclusions out of it.

Sorry if you are upset by my comments about Port Klang however I did work on the P&O passenger and cruise ships for over 30 years so I think I do know the areas you are mentioning.

The report was really little more than this, no mention of a tug or towline.
Anyway, I see from Maritime Matters that Star Cruises has denied that the Norway has moved. Considering how visible she must be at Port Klang, I very much doubt that Star can be lying about this.
I'm certainly not upset, and I'm sure you know the region well. But if you don't agree that the Sumatra coast is very close to Port Klang, I would suggest having a look at a map of the region.

Anyway, maybe she can be seen out in the Straits of Malacca off Port Kelang when approaching KLIA at Sepang.

If she ends up in a Chinese scrapyard, I doubt any pics of her will be seen again. What a shame she could not have been partially stripped of some of her original French Line fittings/fixtures before she departed Germany.
quote:Originally posted by Linerdan:If the ship is broken up here , do Chinese scrapyards/workers release items from the ship to be sold to collectors around the world?
I'm guessing that Chinese scrapyards have about as much interest in selling off historical liner artifacts to collectors as those scrap merchants in Alang do, were so many great ships have recently met their end, and very little of their wares are anywhere to be seen. Interior fittings of the once graceful and elegant ssFrance and ssNorway will adorn coffee shops, restaurants, hotels, and private homes of the local communites in China or India near were she will end her days, and all we can hope for are the graphic pictures of her being discected, dismantled, and devoured.
