The Last Salute webcam is frozen, but from the Isola Gigilio webcam it appears they're working on the funnel.

Not good. Last Salute guys just posted this on FB:

"After some hard days on Isola del Giglio we have to decide to stop the camera at once. Reasons are the termination of the consent to place the camera on the last location. We tried everything to change the camera to another position and we had an agreement for a new position. After a 1500 Km. trip to Italy we found out the new position wasn't good enough and made agreements were not fulfilled.
It was a very difficult decision but we put the plug out of the camera.
We will try to get more done but at this moment there is no longer a live feed.
With our apology to you all on behalf of The Last Salute crew."

It really is a shame that they decided to terminate their project including the freaking webcam! Just when it was getting good.

The footage they have shot to date really won't amount to anything unique or special other than the ship just sitting there for the last couple of months.

A missed opportunity indeed.

As long as we are speculating my money would be on an entity like discovery who can profit from documenting the removal rather than carnival

I agree with you on the top part of the funnel, wished Final Salute wasn't gone, imagine all of the neat things we could have seen.
I had seen the ginormous crane coming in before I went to bed last night, but only at a distance, now it's really there:

They're trying to restart the project by renting an apartment to place the camera. In the process of trying to find funding right now.

YAY FUZZY, I'm very happy to know about that. I know you'll keep us up-to-date on how soon they'll get the cam up and running again. Thank you for telling us.

I wish them the best, will donate a few bucks to the cause since I'm so fascinated by the entire salvage operation.

Speaking of the salvage operation, does anyone know where we can find some updated pics with all the work being done to the port side?

Last salute posted a few pics (windows covered, rock removed, stairs installed, etc) on their FB but that's about all that I found.
There has got to be more people interested in this enormous task than just us, right?

There are a handful of photos at Navi e Armatori, but you have to join up to see them. There is one with the funnel top removed and another when the pipes are covered for chopping, but nothing else much in addition to the facebook link.

ROME – Officials say the capsized Costa Concordia cruise ship will not be moved from its resting place off Italy's Tuscan coast as quickly as planned.

Giglio island Mayor Sergio Ortelli told reporters Monday that the timetable for removal of the liner, now lying on its side off the island's port, has been pushed back.

The Italian government office overseeing removal said in a statement that the Concordia should be set upright and able to float again by the end of spring 2013, ahead of Giglio's next tourist season.

Salvage experts in May had predicted towing could start in early 2013.

It appears the Gigilio webcam needs to be updated. It's not giving us live feeds or am I missing something here?

It's doing fine on my end too Dave, glad for that. Last night it looked like it was frozen. Maybe it needed to recycle, when it should have been night time there at this time...it looked like it was stuck for the mid afternoon, sun was still out.

Looks like they're finished with the huge crane. A couple of smaller vessels came by and the operational crane attached to it has been lowered. I expect it to be gone soon. And it appears more of the smokestack is gone.

This phase must be starting now:
quote:

Sept. 1-Nov. 15: Installation of caissons on left side of vessel and construction of submarine platforms.

Dec. 1: Sensitive stage of salvage begins with rotation of wreck with the installation of boxes on its right side.
