Princess has announced that TAHITIAN PRINCESS, ex R FOUR, will be renamed OCEAN PRINCESS in 2009.

The original OCEAN PRINCESS was built in 2000 and has been P&O's OCEANA since 2002.

Tahitian Princess to Be Renamed Ocean Princess
New Name to Reflect Ship's Focus on Worldwide Itineraries

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (April 3, 2008) - Tahitian Princess, one of the small ships in the Princess fleet, will be renamed in 2009, becoming Ocean Princess. The new name is intended to reflect the ship's new deployment on worldwide itineraries. The renaming will take place while the ship is out of service during a routine maintenance period in Singapore in November 2009.

During next year's fall season, Pacific Princess, another of the line's small vessels, will provide cruises from Papeete, Tahiti, where the Tahitian Princess has been based.

"Tahitian Princess, along with our other two small ships, has developed a loyal following of passengers who enjoy a more intimate cruise experience, and also the opportunity to visit some off-the-beaten-path destinations," said Jan Swartz, Princess' senior vice president of customer service and sales. "As this ship is now sailing on itineraries around the world, we felt its name should reflect a more global theme."

Tahitian Princess joined the Princess fleet in 2002, and has been primarily deployed on sailings in the South Pacific, particularly French Polynesia and Hawaii. Beginning this summer, the ship sets off on new worldwide deployments, featuring a Connoisseur's cruise in Alaska, a world cruise in early 2009 and a season of unique Northern Europe sailings next summer. Following the 2009 renaming, Ocean Princess will sail on a series of Asia voyages to be announced separately.

Additional information about Princess Cruises is available through a professional travel agent, by calling 1-800-PRINCESS, or by visiting the company's website at www.princess.com.[/quote]

Logical. Will PACIFIC PRINCESS be based in Tahiti full time or will, just like her name, cruise to other places in the Pacific?

Don't really see the point of the name change.....

Pacific Princess will only do a season in Tahiti during the fall, she will then do a world cruise and then other long cruises the rest of the year inc Med etc.

This doesn't make a whole lot of sense and seems to be change for change sake.

Does this mean that if Caribbean Princess is ever relocated that it would need its name changed?

I can only assume that market research concluded that pax in Miami or Europe would be confused if they were offered a regional cruise on a ship named after Tahiti but then again they could have just left the Tahitian Princess in Tahiti and used Pacific Princess instead.

What is certain from this is that there is absolutely no likelihood of Oceana returning to Princess which is not surprising given Sea Princess, Sun Princess and Dawn Princess have effectively left the US fleet.

Brad - You can already take a Canada/New England cruise on CARIBBEAN PRINCESS! I've never liked that name anyway.

And of course, neither PACIFIC PRINCESS was/is restricted to the Pacific. The old one used to come to New York all the time.

A while ago I think Princess announced (or it was at least rumored) that one of its ships was going to be called CALIFORNIA PRINCESS. That really sounds silly.

As for the previous OCEAN PRINCESS, it does seem she's left the fleet for good, though of course there would be nothing stopping her from returning under a different name. Who knows?

I rather like the look of the SUN-class ships; frankly I think they look nicer inside and out than the GRAND-class. (Well, certainly outside - anything looks better than a GRAND-class outside...! )

Logic would say yes, but not necessarily. Princess had/has an opportunity to name these vessels (or other future ships) by the seas, oceans and continents it cruises, i.e.: MEDITERRANEAN, INDIAN, ATLANTIC, ASIAN, etc. That's the way I see it anyway.

There's a comment in William Mayes' "Cruise Ships' book as follows:- "She [T. Princess] is used for year round cruising at Tahiti. This appears to be a condition of acquisition of the ship which received French Govt subsidies when built, on the basis that she would be operated for a number of years in French Polynesia."

If this is the case and the relevant number of years has now passed, then the ship is free to cruise anywhere (which appears to be the case). I can see that Princess might think that a name-change would underscore the change in the ship's status.

I'm glad.

I always thought naming ships after specific destinations was dumb. Caribbean Princess should also be renamed. The only exception to this rule is Pacific Princess--which is a special given the history.

I agree, it's terribly limiting, and as you'll note, Tahitian Princess will have a stint in Alaska this year. Yeah, that makes sense......NOT.

Well we are still waiting for an African Princess. Actually Princess/Carnival/...of the seas bloody anything wouldn't be bad.......

I had heard the Californian Princess but that could get if,y, Ohio Princess, Hawaian Princess (works), Alaskan Princess (ok) Washington DC Princess, New Hampshire Princess, Florida Princess (OK), - most wouldn't really work.

There were many ships named after 'locations' that did or are not necessarily operating close to these locations.

What's wrong with an e.g. Hawaii themed/named ship traveling the world? Better than many other decoration themes or ship names.

African Princess.

Lack of balconies make her one of the less popular in the fleet, however she is nice size, carries fewer pax than all the others, has huge deck space and the crew to pax ratio is the highest in the fleet. Also one of the best most traditional looking ships anywhere. Reccomended especially for longer cruises only.
