While we were waiting to leave the Sensation we were standing with all the other passengers who had early flights, we were looking down on the information desk as people picked up their bills. We spent $423 on tours and drinks Really great for us we spent $970 last year!!!! I said to my daughter look at this guys bill, it was two full pages printed end to end. Ours was half a page. As we watched he unfolded it and the pages just fell, it was like the old printer paper that stays together, it was 6 or 7 pages long every page full. The look on his face was a picture, everyone started to shout down to him asking "how much.... how much is it " the total was $1896 US. They were from Ontario!!!! Can you imagine. Another girl we saw was complaining to the info desk that her sail and sign card would not work. She had reached her limit on her visa that she had used as a deposit $1150. It was first thing Wednesday morning We had been on the ship 2 and 1/2 days. These kids will be paying for the vacation for years. I hope it was worth it... What stories do you have about large bills.

Hooked on cruising, Hi,

That's not too bad. My bar tabs usually equal the U.S. National Debt.

Regards,
Mike

Good question! (I'v asked this question in the past).

I must admit I was shocked how much some CruiseTalkers spend on board. Now I know why Cruising is such a profitable business.

On our first cruise 5 years ago our tab was over $500. We are gradually shrinking the expences for on board spending eliminating the tours. We just don't care to be hurried through an area or spend more time than needed at these sites. Doing our own thing we have found out is more relaxing and enjoyable. Our last on board tab was $54.

I edited this message because I spelled tab wrong. I always wonder what people chang when they edit their messages, so now you know why mine was edited.

I think the largest onboard bill I had was on the Grand Princess $779.00 May 2000. But... much of that was a phone call to my secretary and faxes to the office.

Depending on the itinerary.. if it is Caribbean.... my bills are normally less than $200..... I am a very light drinker, don't book shore-excursiions... it's usually bingo card. some pictures...a couple of drinks... and nick-nacks from the ship's store for my one and only nephew.

European cruises... I run about $500 for 10-11 nights.

When we first started cruising (early to mid twenties) in the 70's and whole heartedly chasing the endless party our bar bill was as much as one of us paid for the cruise at that time it was only a few that took advantage of the cashless system. One Man traveling with his two daughters in there 20's used the cashless system and in the lounge proir to disembarkation he sat slumped looking at his bill which was well in to the thousands. I know the girls had a good time! Kevin

Our bill on a 7 night cruise is always over $1000 and drinking is only 20-30% of it.
We don't gamble, so that's not it either.
Unfortunately my wife enjoys the spa and I like the art actions.

Our spending habits on board have varied a lot over the years. In the early days we would take the tours and have some drinks probably running about $300-$400 per week.
On the other end of the spectrum we once were on a 7 day cruise and had a bill of $16. We did our drinking in the cabin that week.
Our biggest was on an Alaska cruise when we took an airtour total that week was over $700.

Ours too - on our first few cruises we bought every picture taken (more or less) - On board 'duty free' prices were great and we took many tours. We're not big drinkers so that was never a big item. We've never gambled or paid for bingo on our cc's - that's a mug's game - too easy to get carried away.

On vacation, we don't stint ourselves - if you can't afford to squander a few bucks it's better to stay home.

Happy Cruisin'

Hi Hooked!!!!! Hoping you had a good vacation. Did you give a reader review? I hope so - will check it out. With regards to the "on board bills", I would like to think you are like me. Yes, I do enjoy a drink, but I also know my limit and I also know what my Visa will accept. For those people that go overboard, GLAD you had a great time but feeling sorry for you that you have to pay for it all year and can't book next year because you have run out of credit. Not nice but I think that we all need to be a bit reasonable here. Know what your credit is, download a currency exchange card, and have fun but don't blow it!! My brother-in-law is still paying for a trip two years ago!!!

As with others, we have learned not to book too many tours through the ship. We sneak our little bit of liquor on board. Buy our drinks of the day at the pool. With age comes cheaper bills.
