O.K so just how big or small has your 'cashless' bill been at the end of your cruises? IP: Logged |

Our bill is never an eye-popper. If we buy art it can get up there, but otherwise about $175 a day is average for us.

Its amazing how it adds up! We have relatively modest bar bills as neither of us drink much, a bottle of wine at dinner and lots of soft drinks in the sun. The trips soon add it up though along with purchases from the shops. The highest for us was on the Disney Magic where the shops sold some lovely things - the only problem was no one told us we would have to declare them for US tax when we got back and pay accordingly. All the "Alien" passengers (and yes even some American citizens) got caught out by this. Anyway back to the point I have seen people run up massive bills at the bar and even worse (for them) at the Casino. I may sound stuffy but I'm not sure I agree with people being allowed to gamble on credit like that -it would be too easy for it to get out of hand. IP: Logged |

Ascendency, $175 per day pops my eyes . 90% of my bill is always the excursions, which are very overpriced as far as I'm concerned.[This message has been edited by Malcolm (edited 10-28-2000).] IP: Logged |

I agree Malcolm. What is $175 in sterling? About £115. Actually, the more I think about it that would seem not too bad. I travel in a group of three and yeah, drinks do play a reasonable role in it, but its definately shore excursions. So it largely depends on you itinerary (Mediterranean is a real stinger - Rome, Pompeii, Athens, Barcelona, etc etc etc). Apart from Thomson's Topaz, which other ships operate on an AllInclusive basis? That must reduce the bill a wee bit... Paddy. IP: Logged |

Oh MY GOD!!! For a 14 day cruise, $175.00 X 14 = $2,450.00 We do most of our cocktails in our cabin. Room service juice is free, so is the ice and in port I buy a bottle of Vodka. I also bring a full bottle when I board the ship. Not to say I don't have a bar tab on the ship, I don't want you to think I'm cheap. I buy tours, drinks, photos, Ship Logo coffee mugs for the office and a friend of mine, he now has 28 mugs from me. Hmmmmm...average cost of coffee mug, $8.00 X 28 = $224.00 WELL I BETTER CUT BACK ON THAT!!! LOL With Kindest Regards RichardIP: Logged |

Ours averages over $100 a day. We have wine or champagne with dinner every night, and a bottle of champagne delivered almost every day to our cabin for mimosas or a drink when we are getting dressed for dinner. IP: Logged |

I have to admit I buy a lot of Strawberry Daiquiris. Yummy! One simply doesn't order one of those in a bar in Belfast!IP: Logged |

Has never been less than $100/day nor more than $150 but I'm not big on the logo stuff: it's all liquor, tours and tips and a photo or two.I was doodling this morning about the potential "extras" for next week's cruise on CARONIA. Cunard puts the tips on the bill now but before gratuities were included. If the waiter and cabin stewardess were good, they always got a bit extra, so $500 there. ($22/day for two to which I expect to add about $50 each, in cash, to the waiter and the stewardess.) Tours add up: 6 ports x 2 people x $50 each (average) so there goes $600. Laundry adds about $200; photos $50. Thus $1350 before one starts to drink. I figure $50 a day is a conservative figure but have never gone much lower: a bottle of wine starts at $25 and once in a while ranges up to $40. The rest goes on drinks. (I like the *bottle of vodka in the cabin* idea: I'll have to see if they can keep me in limes and tonic water.) From the above tally I have to subtract the 2 bottles of wine and 1 of champagne usually provided by Cunard, the TA and Amex respectively and factor in the free drinks from the captain's party, the World Club party and the "event" one is offered by Amex as well as the $700 credit offered on board. So: $2250 divided by 18 days puts us at a shade over $125 a day before any film is developed, golf shirts are bought or shiny trinkets are obtained in the onboard shops. It adds up. I still remember my shock at seeing the first one. I was standing in line with newfound Australian friends with whom we'd shared several "tinctures" on a daily basis to settle at the pursar's office and reacted in shock when I saw the $2000 figure at the bottom of the bill for 2 weeks on the QE2 and thought "I couldn't possibly have spent that much" when Steve leaned over with an evil grin and showed me his which was almost $3000. He claimed he'd more film developed. Right. IP: Logged |

What is the AMEX discount??? While on the Bolero this march break our final bill came to $1350 for 7 days. Most of that was tours, we spent way too much but enjoyed everyone of them. We are going to try and cut the cost of tours next year but we have already decided that we are going to do the 'swim with dolfin tour' $119 US each and the Stingray tour not sure of the cost. With 3 people to pay for I guess our bill will be enough. We didn't drink to much, We were worried about getting hungover we did enjoy the happy hour though. My favourite were the strawberry Daiquiris too Paddy but we always asked for them to be made with vodka instead of rum! We did buy some photos and 2 small gifts, but you are all right it can add up and you do get a shock when you see it in print on the last day. Hell you only live once right!!!!IP: Logged |

Now I realise how profitable running a cruise ship can be! The fare is my biggest purchase, followed by excursions. On my recent cruise to the Baltic, which was very port intensive, we opted out of most of the excursions as it was cheaper to do our own thing! Don't get me wrong...each to his own. I am not criticising what people spend, I'm just surprised. I personally could not afford to spend a large sum of money per day, especially on a two week cruise.

Frienss of mine went on a Med cruise on the IslandBreeze in August '99 and saved a fortune. The booked about two weeks before departure for £499 each. They didn't take any of the ships tours, and as there were six of them it is not surprising (out of Naples they went to Pompeii and also got to go to Sorrento and Capri, which none of the guided tours offer unfortunately). In addition to this the father confiscated the four kids bar cards so any spending was well-monitired. Tehehe, I would have pushed him overboard if he tried to take my card.Paddy. IP: Logged |

Hey Malcolm! Maybe we should take the"Buy Premier Plan" out of mothballs. You don't have to make a dime selling the cruise, we'll make a fortune in the gift shopLOLIP: Logged |

Hooked:US Amex Platinum card holders get an automatic $300 per cabin credit when booking on the 10 or so participating lines. Some lines/cabins you get an upgrade instead - Cunard gives you the credit. (Pays for the card fee, or so I rationalize.) I presume the same program applies in Canada. The rest was a $100 pp World Club credit and a $100 pp credit to deposit early or $200 plus $200 plus $300 for a total of $700. It doesn't go very far on a cruise of this length, though: either the tours alone or the tips and dry cleaning together would almost wipe it out. Either way you still gotta cover the booze which, freed from concerns about driving home or telling one's boss what you really think of him, tends to flow more freely. IP: Logged |

Hi Bostom, I'm too cheap to pay to use a credit card, I want the companys to pay me I will only use a card with a perk. I use American express and get air miles or I use a GM visa and get a few $$ towards my next new car. we have booked for next year under a "guarantee" We have been told that we will most definitly be upgraded from the cheapest cabins. We will have to wait and see. This would be nice then we would feel like we could spend even more money on those happy hour drinks!!!!!IP: Logged |

Scary moment on the last morning of a cruise on the Costa Classica the other week ... the statement pushed under my door totalled 900,000.The bill was in Italian lira, so in fact it was a quite respectable GBP 300-odd. But first thing in the morning, it was a bit of a shock! IP: Logged |

Perhaps you guys don't use the health spa facilities like we do. Massages, facials, whatever. The $175 includes excursions, stuff from the shops, dry cleaning, etc. Our total drink bill for a 7 day cruise is about $300 of it. Which includes wine every night. One piece of art could range in the hundreds. We don't even gamble! We will skimp on the room, but we will never skimp on the activities while on board! IP: Logged |

I'm not a big spa fan: it'd take more than a rubdown to beautify me: surgery, maybe. I do like Steiner's haircuts, though. IP: Logged |

I'm afraid that I'm a little cynical about the various beauty and spa treatments offered on ships: Mud Packs - my garden is full of mud? Massage - that's why I got married! Hydro Therapy - I just take a shower, it's free. Essential Oils - they never used to be essential? Bostom, great idea! Maybe the ships of the future should offer 'full' plastic surgery? There would be plenty of room for an operating theatre on the mega ships [This message has been edited by Malcolm (edited 11-03-2000).] IP: Logged |

Malcolm:Given it'd be a LOT of surgery, it'd have to be a long cruise Can't imagine any line would take on the responsibility nor want the image of mummy-like pax wandering the halls waiting for the scars to heal. And you can't drink or go out in the sun, at last for the first few days so not spending any money. On or off this topic, I did read a year or so ago a trip report from one of Celebrity's ships where a passenger had a breast enhancement performed before the trip and was happy to show off the estimable results of her surgeon's skills, usually in a crowded cocktail lounge. Why am I never on these trips? IP: Logged |

I don't know about the biggest bar tab, but my husband ordered a Johnny Walker Blue last cruise. I do not recall the cost but I remember rolling my eyes when I asked what the difference was between JW Black and JW Blue and he said $$$. (I think it goes for about $125 a bottle here, if you can find it). He only had one!IP: Logged |
