Knock Nevis [ex Jahre Viking, Seawise Giant] is to be upgraded in Qatar, see here. Maybe somewhere near feargus, for a photo?

Over a quarter of a mile long and over half a million tons DWT...impressive. Imagine having to try docking her without tugs!!

Its amazing to me that there is even a dry dock big enough for her.

It funny to me when someone calls FOTS or QM2 the biggest ship in the worl when this ship is so much bigger.

Sorry to be pedantic again, but there are a number of ways to measure ‘size’, although Jahre Viking probably wins by most methods, but not in ‘height’ for example.

Her gt is 260,941; substanially larger than any passenger vessel, her draft is 24.6m. Her beam is 68.6m; wider than Freedom. Her freeboard height above keel laden is 29.8m, but then her aft superstructure which I cannot find a figure for. Unladen I am sure she must be taller than Freedom, laden I don't know?
Still I would not dispute her title to being the world's largest ship.

Fancy building a vessel which cannot even pass through the English Channel laden.

I always imaged that there really was a Fred. Olsen, a jolly man sitting in a wood-panelled office running his fleet of ships with a devoted secretary who would occasionally bring him a nice cup of tea and, as a special treat, a couple of biscuits.

Then I saw the fleet of superfast ferries in the Canaries, with Fred. Olsen's name on the side, and I wondered whether there was a hidden side to this kindly old gentleman.

And now I learn that it's a global corporation which also runs giant megaships like Knock Nevis.

Was there ever a Fred. Olsen?

There have been 2 Fred. [Fredrik] Olsens. The company was named after one, the son of the founder Petter Olsen and the current chairman is also Fred. but ownership was passed to his daughter 10+ years ago. He still however takes an active roll in running things, and is responsible for the artwork collections on their vessels. [You must recall the threads on his Munch Collecton last year?].

Fred. Olsen is a huge conglomerate with wide ranging interests, including oil rigs, H&W, aircraft [own part of SAS, or did] and even the watch on your arm may be part of the group [Timex Corp].
I always remember this

I don't know if he still does, but stories go that when he took the fancy, he would just turn up in port to inspect and sail on one of the cruise ships ad hoc.

the height of the Knock Nevis from keel to the top of the funnel is around 230 ft if i remember correctly.
Can't say that I have seen here out here in Qatar. I did see her come into Dubai drydocks a few years ago when i worked there, very impressive.
if she were filled with crude oil at todays prices each cargo would be worth over 250 million dollars
