POLH's & POP's last trips - 29/30 Sep 2005
For sslewis:-
One last trip on my favorite Pride of Le Havre & return aboard Pride of Portsmouth. Strong NWly & incoming Atlantic tide caused quite a swell, & it felt like crossing the Atlantic! Pride of Le Havre's usual vibrating purr couldn't be felt as she rode the rough seas. How can I record the vibrations and smells? [Now listening to my answerphone....]
I caught Hanseatic during her docking in very tight corners & strong winds! It almost felt like a QE2 crossing as the POLH is 32m wide & carried quite a few Americans & Canadians eager to have a good time before being consigned to a tunnel, a flying tube or worse a floating tub;-)
On return after a wonderful sleep in a forward facing cabin, the slightly emotional Captains voice announced P&O Ferries' last overnight arrival in Portsmouth....
As we docked, I watched the massive bow door lift majestically enough for me to grab my camera. She will close 41 years of service under the Red Duster from Portsmouth when she docks tonight at 9.20pm. After destoring all weekend, the former Olau twins will head together for Falmouth to prepare for a new ownership under MSC and much warmer climes.
Goodbye to the "Days of wine and roses" ships! Photos by sslewis, Louy |
