Malcolm: we "toured" her while in Edinburgh last July--really fascinating! I think I could learn to live on board for awhile, especially with the full staff.IP: Logged |

Winner, I've not been to see her yet. I will have to visit her soon. The Royal Yacht Britannia is one of the world's most famous ships. Launched at John Brown's Shipyard in Clydebank in 1953, the Royal Yacht proudly served Queen and country for forty-four years. During that time Britannia carried The Queen and The Royal Family on 968 official voyages, from the remotest regions of the South Seas to the deepest divides of Antarctica.

Malcolm.....There was a wonderful TV program aired over here on PBS(no commercials) a couple of years ago.I think it was called "Britannia" and it was all about life on board the Royal Yacht, from the decks below(dish washing and stuff) to the Royal usage by the Queen and Prince Philip. It was fabulous. It gave such a terrific insight to what goes on or rather did go on when the Royals were on board. I hope PBS or someone will show it again even if it's just for nostalgia. Did you ever see it on BBC,Malcolm? I felt so sad when the yacht was retired...so many wonderful memories of happier days. Terri :-(( IP: Logged |

We toured her this year, definitely a must do - a tip is - arrive early, we had already booked our tickets over the telephone, just had to pick them up and were first on her, for the first hour we had her all to ourselves, and even spent time having a fascinating and lengthy conversation with one of the guides.Cheers M. Hi Terri, I think I did see TV prog. it was very good. I can feel that I'm about to be controversial again:I'm not sad at all that Britania retired, now I can visit her and board her After all I did help pay for her! The Royal family wanted her 'scuttled' as they did not want the general public onboard! Members of the Royal family cried when she was de-commissioned. (Interestingly, the same family members did not manage to cry at Princess Diana's funeral). The Royal Family wanted a new Yacht built with public money to replace Britannia. However, in recent years the British public have started to regard the Royal family as rather too expensive. The British Government, representing public, rejected the idea. As you can probably guess, I'm not a great Royalist [This message has been edited by Malcolm (edited 11-19-2000).] IP: Logged |

Stop Press!!!The Queen was pictured today on the front of one of our National Newspapers (Daily Mirror) at a Pheasant shoot. After she shot a Pheasant which had refused to die, she is pictured throttling it by hand! That will not do her public image much good!
