Bad news for all the Westerdam fans. Talks are in progress between Holland America and Costa for the transfer of the Westerdam to the latter. Since the talks are between members of the same family it's difficult that they can't find an agreement.Ryndam IP: Logged |

It isn't a bad notice for me!This ship should integrate well in the Costa fleet(perhaps the company will decide to sell the horrific Costa Riviera). Why don't you like this possibility? You are from Genoa and should love Costa cruises!IP: Logged |

With all of the new HAL ships on the way it was just a matter of time before the Westerdam would be leaving the fleet. However, I just cannot picture her as a Costa ship. First her decor could not be more unlike the ultra slick European design of the Costa fleet- and her exterior is totally lacking any Costa traits. Will they spend millions to referbish her- and give her a Costa cylinder funnel? We will see.IP: Logged |

Italian Cruiser....I am interested to know why you feel the Costa Riviera is so bad. I have not sailed her, but would like to know out of curisoity. She does have a beautiful hull. IP: Logged |

To NAL:The Costa Riviera has wonderful exterior lines(far better than the acclaimed Eugenio Costa),but it's like Disneyworld in the interiors:the pool deck is blue carpeted, the "Piazza",a feature of all the Costa ships is ridiculous with totems and flags, the casino is very small, the fitness center is tiny and the cabins offer 6 beds! This ship was excellent until 1993 when it was converted into the American Adventure for unsuccessfull family cruises, destroing the italian atmosphere created by G.de Jorio.IP: Logged |

Italian Cruiser....I had forgotten about the redecoration to the family cruises. Too bad Costa didn't restore her to her former glory. Thanks for your interesting supply. IP: Logged |

If the transfer of the M/S Westerdam will finalize, Costa is going to market her in Germany, as a Carnival Corporation answer to P&O/Aida Cruises.Ryndam IP: Logged |

I find it a bit strange that Costa is the most likely candidate for the buying of the Westerdam. After all Costa is expanding the fleet with newbuilds (just like Holland-America) and so it's weird that they will spend several millions dollars for refurbishing her. Besides she won't fit the Costa fleet, she's just too diferent from all the other ship on the current Costa fleet.Regards Paulo Mestre IP: Logged |

LizB, I don't know when it will happen. This is the complete press release from Lloyd's List: "US cruise giant Carnival Corp is planning a major step to increase its presence in the lucrative German cruise market, Lloyd's List can reveal. The move, which would be made through Carnival's European subsidiary Costa Crociere, appears to be an answer to the P&O Cruise takeover of German operator Aida. Details of the plan are likely to be made public by Costa Crociere during the second half of December. However, Lloyd's List understands that the plan involves Costa buying a large cruise ship dedicated to the German market. She is the 747-cabin 53,872 gt Westerdam (pictured above), currently operated by Costa Crociere's sister company Holland America Line. Lloyd's List understands that Costa will now negotiate with German tour operators to market the ship. The final outcome could be the establishment of a joint venture between Costa and the local tour operator, but in any case the Costa brand would remain. With more than 30,000 German passengers carried in the course of this year, Costa Crociere's presence on the German market is mainly limited to groups as its agency network is reported to be minimal. This is why the alliance with a German tour operator is seen as important, even if the Italian cruise operator decides to go on alone. Capable of carrying up to 1,773 passengers and 639 crew members, the Westerdam, ex Homeric, was built in 1986 and lengthened in 1989 at Mayer Werft shipyard. Her maximum dimensions are 243.2 m long and 29.7 m wide." Ryndam
