This happens more often than many people realize--it's never fun for the persons who miss the ship, but the departure time and time due back aboard is prominently posted. There is simply no excuse to miss a ship, unless by unforeseen mishap. Many forms of travel insurance may help financially in those cases.

Take excursions via the cruise line if your time keeping is suspect. If their own excursion is late back, the ship will wait. As an individual, wave the ship goodbye.

As we used to tell the passengers when I worked on board: "Make sure to take your cameras ashore, because if you miss the ship, at least you'll have a lovely photo opportunity as she sails into the sunset!"

That didn't help an american woman who missed QE2 at Ibiza in 1983. The captain refused to wait 10 minutes. She had to fly to Barcelona via Valencia the next day. She almost missed the ship at Barcelona because of language problems with the taxi driver who drover from the airport. The gangway was being pulled into the ship when her taxi arrived on the pier.
