Museums - The Greenwich Maritime Museum (and Royal Observatory, Queen's House, Navel Chapel, & Painted Hall) are very good in my opinion. You can get a boat from Westminster to Greenwich.
Also nearby the Maritime Museum is the often forgotten 'Museum of Docklands', which tells the history of the Thames and London docks. Both are easily reached by the 'Dockland Light Railway' in 20 mins from central London.
If you like museums the Science Museum (has some nice model ships) and the Imperial War Museum are also very good. I also like the Cabinet War Rooms (Churchill's secret underground bunker). Central London also has a good Transport Museum (Trains and buses) when re-opens later this year after renovation.
London is almost certainly more expensive than all American cities. However it’s not all bad news. £5.10 buys you an off-peak Travelcard which is unlimited tube (underground trains) and red buses in the Central London area which is the area where tourists need to visit. Many of our Museums and Art Galleries have free admission.
If you have time you could even do a day trip to Portsmouth's 'Historic Dockyard' by train and see the HMS Victory and other attractions. It only a few hours journey from Waterloo Station.
All the information about these attractions is on the web, somewhere.

National Service had been abolished in 1960 but the final troops involved on their compulsory military tour of duty were not sent home until the end of December 1963. Unlike their fathers and grandfathers, teenagers in 1964 were not facing the prospect of a European war and increasing living standards allowed them a disposable income.
