A bit of light relief is required after the 4 disasters this week, Star Princess Fire [1 indirect heart attack death], Queen of the North sinking [loss of 2 thought], 12 Millennium pax killed on a trip & 127 people drowned in a shipwreck off Cameroon..... What a week to forget in Maritime History..

So... Fun & Frolics, Volleyball & Vegging out...
In which Cruise Terminal was this taken & what was the occasion? A glass of virtual to bubbly to anyone who gets it with no clues!

No, but I suppose a reasonable guess. There are clues in the picture.

I have no clue as to the occasion or the exact port but I think it is in Germany (the German "flag" on the beach chair). I'ld guess Hamburg during the International Beach Volleyball tournament .

That's not a German flag - it is blue at the top not black.

It's not a German Flag, but the 'flag' isn the clue for the line; as for the terminal, the year is 1999. Guess I get to keep the bubbly

Oh Ernst! This line has been mentioned quite a bit of late on Cruisetalk. It is not a UK based line, but has had a vessel call on one or two occasions.

The flag colours could be those of Queen's University at Kingston, Onatrio but Kingston doesn't have a cruise terminal.

Otoh, does Constanta, Romania have a cruise terminal? Did QE2 call there on a World Cruise?

Pam - have no idea where this photo was taken. Any hints??

Brian - The flag colours could be those of Queen's University at Kingston, Onatrio LOL - they sure could be, but no cruise terminal there and don't think a beach on Lake Ontario looks like that.......... QU is DD, DS and DIL's Alma Mater

The occasion was a visit by a new ship, who made a once only call in UK waters on her way to across the pond from the builder's yard. The 'beach' is make believe inside a terminal to set the scene for visitors & their pals.. the loungers are those which adorn the decks of the cruiseline's vessels; quite distinctive.

I have come up with a short list of cruise ships that were built in 1999:

CARNIVAL TRIUMPH
DISNEY WONDER
EUROPA
GRAND MISTRAL (MISTRAL)
PACIFIC PRINCESS (R3)
PRIDE OF ALOHA (COSTA OLYMPIA/NORWEGIAN SKY)
SEVEN SEAS NAVIGATOR
SUPERSTAR VIRGO
TAHITIAN PRINCESS (R4)
VOLENDAM
VOYAGER OF THE SEAS

The clue for the destination of the cruise ship is in the background image. I would assume this to be the Caribbean and possibly a private island. My guess would be NORWEGIAN SKY (now PRIDE OF ALOHA).

The terminal I can assume is Southampton since it gets many inaugural visits.

Based on the list and the colors of the towels I would guess SuperStar Virgo.

I also thought it could be SUPERSTAR VIRGO. The deckchairs are NCL but they could also be Star since they are owned by them. Also SUPERSTAR VIRGO would only have visited the UK once before heading off to SE Asia. The reason why I still went for NORWEGIAN SKY is because Pam said 'her way to across the pond', meaning the Atlantic and because the image in the background looks more like the Caribbean than SE Asia.

This is true - but shouldn`t we see some Disney characters in this case? This is at least what I would expect.

Well bmajor, I think you got it right. The actual design seems to be the same but those coloured bits make them distinctive. So it's DISNEY WONDER off to the Caribbean!

I also agree with this point. No reference to Mickey anywhere. The other reason why I thought it may not be DISNEY WONDER was that she may have gone straight to the Caribbean from Italy instead of visiting the UK. I don't remember that far back... !

The U.K. is not really on the direct route from Fincantieri to the U.S. - but the chairs fit - and we discussed Disney a lot recently.
Of course one would expect Disney characters BUT maybe they were there and are just not in the picture - and also, Disney is not only about Disney characters being everywhere.

Amazing what you can find on a Google Image search. That image is from Disney Magic.
I wonder if the stripes are just for design,or if they are perhaps padded in some way ,for a head rest/support?

They are only for design - when boarding each passenger has to sign a declaration that they have understood that they must not to touch these stripes at any time and that they would have to wear a Disney character costume for the rest of the cruise if they were found touching on of the stripes.

It doesn't have to be the characters, it could have been a logo or some kind of Disney gimmick, maybe a souvenir. Disney obviously went for something very plain.

They have been in the news for sure since many here tried to guess what they were up to before announcing they would go to Europe (which to some of us was old news anyway), but I also thought Star/NCL was discussed a fair bit on CT lately regarding SS NORWAY and SS UNITED STATES. That was my reasoning anyway. Maybe if anyone has more pics of the deckchairs I wouldn't mind seeing who's got what. In that case a new thread would be appropriate.
