Are there any other kids here who dream of working with ships when your older? What do you want to do if so?

Acctually there are two of us at the California Maritime Academy, I am a sophomore and Waynaro is a freshmen.

Well, there is probably no course for 'running cruise lines' - but one certainly has not to attend a 'maritime academy' for that.

Also, there are many, many people involved in the design of a passenger ship. Whereas officers and captains certainly also contribute to the design of a passenger ship (usually on the owner side) most people involved in the design of a passenger ship have another educational background - so it is not necessary to attend a 'maritime academy' to get involved in the design for passenger ships - e.g. have a look at the relevant engineering degrees.

I too was fascinated with ocean Liners at the ripe age of eleven. We didn't have the internet back then so I had no idea there was such a large community of people that had such a passion for ocean liners. As a young person, I determined that the best way for me to ever be associated with the ships in some way was as an entertainer. I was finally hired in 1989 as an entertainer and I worked my way through a number of positions and ended up as Cruise Director which is, in my opinion, one of the best jobs on the cruise ships. As a Cruise Director you have so much freedom, whereas most of the officers even have limitations as to where they can go in the passenger areas. CD is a fun job too...not that there isn't a certain degree of work associated with the position, but for the most part it was a fun and rewarding position, and it paid extraordinarily well. I also recall that in 1984 I put together a business plan for a Cruise-only travel business. Back then (1984) there were no cruise-only agencies that I knew of, so my business plan was a little ahead of it's time, but that is ultimately the direction I wanted to go because travel agents didn't seem to have the product knowledge I expected. Because of that I saw a niche that needed to be filled...there needed to be a cruise-only agency so that the consumer could get information about a cruise from someone who specialized in cruises and knew what they were talking about.

So yes, I dreamed of being associated in some way to the cruise industry when I was young, and now I wouldn't trade the lifestyle I have had and that I currently have. I'm doing what I have a passion for, so going to work is actually fun for me. You may have a different level of interest than I did of course, so you may want to pursue the ship's officer or captain position.

A friend of mine that I first I met while I was working on the QE2 had a serious passion for ships, and he was about 11 years old. I could see in this kid a passion for ships that I use to have at his age. I gave him a tour of the QE2. I recall showing him the dog kennel and other unique parts of the ship. This kid is now a 2nd officer aboard the QM2 and the first American to work as an officer aboard a Cunard Line ship. He went all out with his passion, joined a maritime academy and worked hard to get to where he's at. Go after your passion and see where it will take you!

I have always wanted to work with ships. My dream was always to have a cruise line with a huge very diverse fleet. Most of the ships would be my own designs, they would be really beautiful inside and out. I am alway drawing up ship designs.

As a sophomore at a maritime academy this summmer I must complete my 2nd training cruise with a company onboard one of their ships. I am talking to Royal Caribbean and NCL America right now. So hopefully I will be with one of them.

Good luck Brandon. I am hoping to go on a cruise ship next summer for my intern/commercial cruise.

Cunard Fan, what interest you more? Design ships, or actually running ships? You can look into Naval Architecture and Engineer schools (Webb Institute is one) or look into Maritime Schools if you want to become a licensed officer on ships. From there on, work your way up the food chain and become an executive for a cruise line.

...not to forget the many, many other opportunties to work 'with' ships. It's not only naval architects and captains.
There is not only a big variety of jobs aboard but also ashore. Maybe you look also for companies/industries who have specialized in supllying the cruise industry. (don't forget - someone has to make the furniture, carpets, curtains, TVs, refigerators, napkins etc.)

That I honestly could not say. I always see myself runnig a cruise line in the future, but then again I always imagine the ships I am running to be my own designs. I have probably a hundred different ship designs for different markets and different destinations. I have been designing my own ship designs since I was a young kid.

You can major in Naval Architecture, learn about ship operation, and get a business degree.

I think its interesting to know someone share the interest as me. I have some designs too and usually I start stetching when I am bored in class.

I hardly ever use either. I usually just draw it on plain paper. I sometimes use the computer or graph paper.

Sketches usually on whatever piece of paper I can find. Then I do my final with graph paper and to scale.

I want to learn how to do more profesional designs. Right now mine our just drawings of what I want my ships to look like. I also do a little bit of floor planing. Have you ever posted any of your designs?
