Stewards were appalled by their intake, and decided to keep track of what this middle-aged couple and their lady friend put away. For one breakfast between 8:00 am and 10:20 am they downed "six grapefruits, six pairs of kippered herring, six mutton chops, six portions of potatoes, six portions of poached eggs, six portions of grilled tomatoes, six portions of English bacon, six portions of American bacon, nine portions of griddle cakes, 21 rounds of buttered toast, 2 and a half pounds of Oxford marmalade, a large bottle of milk and nine pots of coffee."
Amazingly, they returned for lunch between 100 pm and 340 pm, hopefully purged, and started again with all hooves in the trough. For lunch, they consumed, "three one pound jars of caviar, six more grapefruit, three Welsh rarebits, six whole grilled chickens, 12 corn on the cob, six large Idaho baked potatoes, 3 Waldorf salads, 3 portions of cold chicken, 3 baked apples, 3 double portions of ice cream, 3 apple pies, cheese, crackers, and 9 pots of tea."
Unbelievably, they didn't die from all this, and returned at 700pm for dinner, which lasted until 1010pm. They had found the caviar to their taste, and started dinner with three more one pound jars of the stuff, followed by "three more grapefruit, three more Waldorf salads, 12 sticks of celery, 6 portions of cauliflower, 6 whole roasted chickens, 6 plates of cold roasted turkey, 3 portions of lettuce and tomato salad, 3 double portions of ice cream, 3 portions of Swiss rolls, finishing up with sweet cakes, cheese, crackers, fruit, and four pots of tea."
To no one's surprise, they skipped the midnight buffet, but room service delivered sandwiches, grilled sardines on toast, and cake to their rooms.
For the four days, they tipped their three table stewards two dollars to split among themselves. They didn't drink any alcohol; they didn't use deck chairs; they just ate. the cruise cost $65 per person, and the caviar alone set the Cunard Company back $60. All quotes from the New York Times 9/2/31."
