While she was sporting the name of the most tragically known ship in the Maritime history, the TITANIC, I took that shot some 26 years ago, while I was visiting Greece for the first time. I rented a car during a week stay in the region, and visited some the area where I found the old SANTA ROSA (renamed ATHINAI by her last Greek owners) and two other ex Typaldos ships, the HELLAS and smaller RODOS.
They were three alongside the Eleusis Bay on the main road connecting Piraeus and Corinth, almost lying on the beach.

SANTA ROSA : Completed for Grace Line in 1932 as part of a quartet of express liners involved in the New York/San Francisco run via the Panama canal, she was the last to go, following a 23 years laid up.
Both sister SANTA ELENA and SANTA CLARA were lost during war duties being used a troopers, while SANTA ROSA and SANTA PAULA survived.

In 1958 they would be eventually replaced by modern twins bearing the same name. To make confusion , while the SANTA ROSA was due to be introduced in June 58 to replace the old one, the old SANTA PAULA suffered some engine troubles and was laid up leaving then in service the old SANTA ROSA with the new one ! With two SANTA ROSA now in service, the old ROSA was renamed PAULA. Eventually when the second ship, the new SANTA PAULA was delivered later the same year in autumn, the SANTA PAULA came out. It was such a strange sight to see in Hoboken the pair of SANTA PAULA ships, before their sale to Greece in 1961.

Both in service for Mediterranean cruising, only the AKROPOLIS made some escape further north eaven calling in Le Havre, Southampton and Zeebrugge. Out of service in 1966, the old sisters were laid up. the AKROPOLIS (ex SANTA PAULA) was enventually scrapped locally in Perama in 1971. the SANTA ROSA (ATHINAI) remained laid up. in 1978 while a film company was looking a possible film shooting aboard an old liner, the QUEEN FREDERICA (ex ATLANTIC/MONTERREY) was inspected, but she was alreaddy under way to be scrapped. Instead the ATHINAI was found more suitable, renamed TITANIC, with her bow repainted in blacK, she was towed to Piraeus modern station "en guise" of New York usual pier. Some shots were made onboard where some windows were similar with the old sunkken liner. The ship produced in Malta by Jerry Jameson "Raise the Titanic" became another pictures industry flop when realesed in 1979. The old SANTA ROSA returned to her moorings in Perama bay and was only and finally towed to Aliaga in Turkey in 1989 for scrap.

SANTA ROSA / SANTA PAULA built in Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Co , in New Jersey.
270 passengers only while delivered, later transformed to fit up to 620 passengers in 3 classes following their war duties.
9.135 tons for 155 m long
Designed by William Francis Gibbs, they were in fact a small version of the later to be introduced SS AMERICA (1940) visible in distance at the ship stern on this picture !
Their replacement ships (1958) were also designed by Gibbs as a smaller version with one funnel of the fabulous SS UNITED STATES.
The main feature of both ships (not applied yet aboard any today’s cruise ship) was a large dining room, placed between their funnels which had a retractable roof allowing passengers to enjoy directly outside dining with the stars when weather permitting.
