In March 2012, Dong Fang Ocean(Exxon Valdez) was purchased by Global Marketing Systems, Inc. for scrap at an estimated US$16 million and sailed under her own power to a ship breaker in Singapore. She changed hands again among scrap merchants (a common occurrence) and was eventually routed to Alang, India, under the ownership of Priya Blue Industries and at some point renamed the Oriental Nicety [1]. As of May 2012 a court order has prevented the ship from being beached, as it was successfully argued that the vessel is in breach of the Basel Convention.

Priya Blue loves their ships big and large. They broke up the SS Blue Lady and the Maxim Gorkiy. Now they are the proud owners of the Exxon Valdez. It would be interesting to see how this story unfolds as it reminds me about the SS Norway and the end result was for that ship. I hope that Peter Knego would be kind enough to keep us posted on the fate of this infamous oil tanker's final days as he did with the oil tanker MONT (ex SEAWISE GIANT, HAPPY GIANT, JAHRE VIKING, KNOCK NEVIS)

The media should stop referring to the vessel's past as the EXXON VALDEZ. She hasn't been owned by Exxon in years.

There is nothing wrong with referring to this ships past name. It's the history behind the 'Exxon Valdez', not just the fact that it was owned by the Exxon corporation that matters.

Prior to the epic 2010 Deepwater Horizon (BP) disaster/fiasco/tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico, the Exxon Valdez incident in Prince William Sound (Alaska) was the largest ever spill in U.S. waters. And the fact that it happened in the wildlife rich pristine marine waters of Alaska didn't help the matter.

To refresh your memory...

Don't believe everything you read. The scrap business in Alang is cut throat and lots of "politics" get drawn in. The whole mess with the Norway and the ex. Independence demonstrated all of that and the Indian media gets caught in the middle of the rivalries.

You're right about that, Allan. India says one thing(not allowing contaminated ships to be broken up) and does the opposite. For example, one the SS Norway arrived at Alang, that was it. Yet, we all naively thought that the Indian Supreme Court would send the ship back to Germany the moment it was there, like that French aircraft carrier. But, it dragged on for over a year when they finally say to the owners: Break it up. Oh Break it up!!! And the SS Norway was gone. After that any time I see a ship beached at Alang, I simply say: Next!!!
