She still is, at this point. Currently there's some debate over the possibility of her current management team suggesting that they will do the unthinkable: cut her loose from her moorings and take her on a "grand tour" of the world, beginning in Japan! This is a sure way to destroy the ship if you ask me. Look at www.queenmary.org for more information.

As for the new ship, whether or not she's even to be named "Queen Mary" is at this point open to conjecture. There is one school of thought that believes that, although the original was a Cunard ship, they basically sold the rights to the name when they sold her to Long Beach, so the successor cannot be named after the original. It is this school of thought that figures that the new ship will be named Victoria.

Maybe I a little biased, being British: but in my opinion, if you live within reasonable travelling distance of Long Beach and have not visited the ‘Queen Mary’, you should be ashamed of yourself. She is magnificent!

I’d even go as far to say that even if you live a thousand miles away you should hop on a plane and visit her, she’s truly worth it.

hi there,
I live in Long Beach and thought I would pass along some encouraging news regarding the Queen Mary that I saw in the newspaper...it has been about a week so forgive me if details are lacking...

The operator of the Queen Mary after several (forever??) years of operating in the red stated that for the past year it was profitable to the tune of 5 million dollars...

There is a great synergy happening in the harbor area of Long Beach with the new aquarium and downtown redevelopment, in fact there is talk of negotiations with Carnival Cruise lines to dock in Long Beach using the "Dome" that used to house the "Spuce Goose" as a terminal. Hopefully, if this comes to pass, other cruise lines will be interested in Long Beach as an embarkation/debarkation point. Cruise buffs would certainly be excited to do a pre or post cruise package staying at the Queen Mary.

I have always enjoyed and been proud that the "International" city had such a beautiful landmark / historical treasure. Hopefully our city fathers will now understand that the Queen is an asset not a liability. Some in Long Beach were disappointed when Disney decided to pull out from area development but I truly think that things work out.

Believe me, Malcolm, I'm aching to do just that. I've even managed to get my wife to consider it, notwithstanding the stories of hauntings within her hull which gave her some trepidations. Unfortunately it's easier said than done at present.

Joe at PwC, The stories about the hauntings at the Queen Mary are silly and management even tried to capitalize on these rummors of hauntings by creating a promo entitled: Ghosts, Myths & Legends of the Queen Mary. I have been aboard the Queen Mary probably more than most people in all areas of the ship and at all hours of the night - and I am very sensitive to "spiritual" events - but I have NEVER sensed any "spiritual" activity, or even "demonic" activity on the Queen Mary. When you sneak around the lower decks of the ship that are sealed off from the public, yes you will hear strange sounds, but believe me, they are natural sounds of plumbing and the usual creaking noises. I've heard all the ghost stories related to the Queen Mary and I saw the TV specials where they brought some freaky ghost researcher quack onboard to document ghosts - For dramatic purposes, a ghosts or two were documented, but let me tell you, that I've been to those areas of the ship many many times and I'm sorry to break this to you but they are all hoaxes.

So go to the Queen Mary for a visit and don't worry about the silly ghosts stories.

That's pretty funny! It's amazing what people will do to get on TV. I'll forward this to my wife via email. This will put any doubts to rest. Thanks.

British actress Lynn Redgrave (1943-2010) and her husband and fellow actor John Clark as see on board the 'Queen Mary' when the ship arrived at New York on September 22, 1967. This was the ship's 500th voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. Redgrave is best known for her Oscar nominated role in the film "Georgie Girl" (1966).

Great pic of the wonderful Lynn Redgrave. Reminds me of a story Joan Rivers told about Ms Redgrave after her death. Joan said something like: 'They say she is in a better place but I have been to her house in Bel Air and I can tell you, Lynn is not in a better place!'

As for the pic, looks like a Saxonia Class Cunarder in the background and I think QM was on her 1000th crossing. Her final crossing I recall was her 1001th.
