The Netherlands a small country situated at the North Sea, with a sea faring history of more then 5 century's. A major part of this maritime tradition was the passenger trade.

As small country The Netherlands have always owned a big passenger liner fleet. They sailed around the world with there passengers. Most humble liners doing what they have be build fore. Never intended to be famous or special.

But there the ones who where special maybe not famous but certainly interesting. Two of them Rotterdam Lloyd MS DEMPO and MS BALOERAN build fore the Dutch colonial trade between Rotterdam and Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) They where interesting liners at 17.000 grt. There interiors where revolutionary fore Dutch liners, among the first with art /nouveau/deco interiors.

Sadly both where victims of war DEMPO sailing as allied troopship was torpedoed in 1944. The BALOERAN initially survived the invasion and bombing of Rotterdam. She was confiscated by the Nazi's and was rebuild as hospital ship and renamed STRASSBURG she hit a sea mine and was beached near IJmuiden and torpedoed by Allied torpedo boats in 1943.

I made a collage of the BALOERAN and wanted to share with you.

Greetings Ben.

Lovely Ben, thank you for that. I know nothing of these ships. The tugs are as 'picturesque' love the funnels.

Look what it cost to travel from Singapore to Amsterdam/Rotterdam back in 1933 [bottom cutting - but what was the exchange rate then; Singapore $]. Costly, but no single occupancy supplement. Also note the railway options in Europe for those wanting to get to London a bit quicker.

Great pics Ben, thanks for sharing.

I've always found the forward superstructure of these ships to be interesting. I love the look of the dark bridge front, and the over-abundance of forward-facing windows is pretty amazing. I can only imagine the damage a huge wave would cause to such small ships.

There seems to be a lot of design similarities with the Dutch colonial liners. I remember seeing the Johan V.O.B. in Rotterdam as a small boy as we were about to sail to NY on Nieuw Amsterdam. These two are new for me and therefore unfamiliar.

Pam, both Netherlands Line and Rotterdam Lloyd offered luxury boat trains from either Amsterdam and Rotterdam to Marseilles passengers where able to cut there voyage with I believe 1 to 2 weeks.

NAL both where a answer to the Netherlands Line sisters JOHAN VAN OLDE BARNEVELD and MARNIX VAN SINT ALDEGONDE.

Greetings Ben.

The interwar Dutch colonial liners are among the best-looking ships of their days, very distinctive too, these ships of the Rotterdam Lloyd.

There is a very beautiful art-deco poster of the Baloeran in ivory, golds, black and blue, but I can't find a good picture of it!

Here is a video I found of the Sibajak :Video of original "Sibajak" footage

Ben I can be wrong but one company had a boattrain to Marseilles, and the other to Genua. These boattrains were very luxurious, with Wagons-Lits sleeping cars.

I even think P&0 had such a premium train service, to shorten the voyage to London with a couple of days, avoiding the long trek ove rthe western med, around Gibraltar and the Bay of Biscay.

Colonial liner history is interesting, but on the other hand quite a delicate affair, with all the sensibilities about it....
