Very interesting pics. Speaking of rare images of the scrapping of a retired ocean liner, there are several never before published images of Caronia (1948) being scrapped in Bill Miller's new book on that ship. Many of the images are in color and it is facinating to see entire sections of the former Cunarder being lifted out of the water (w/original green paint showing) and w/some original fittings still in place in the wreck.

Excellent photos David. I've always like her exterior...those squat funnels were very cool. Not too keen on her interiors though....

This is Britannic of 1930. She and her near sister Georgic (one difference between their exteriors was Georgic's more streamlined rounded bridgefront). These ships were built after the cancellation of White Star's giant mid-1920s Oceanic. Britannic was the last liner in White Star livery and kept that livery until being retired in 1960.

The Olympic Class line Britannic of 1915 sank in the Med in 1916 while serving as a WW1 hospitol ship.

Oops I was at work when I typed that and didn't have the book nearby. It's a good book and the pics make it even better.

This reminds me of when I was a boy, seeing the Mauretania (2) being scrapped in Inverkeithing, Scotland. We were passing in the train & my father pointed her out to me (it must have been quite big news in the media at the time). I remember seeing a large green ship. She arrived in Inverkeithing in November 1965 but it would have been June 1966 when I saw her (if indeed it really was her) so they must have been working on her for quite a while).

Graham.

I've seen images (on Flickr I believe) of Mauretania (1939) being scrapped. Amazing how a 26-year old liner had such a short career.

Yes, pity about the poor little ssMaury of 39.
Cunard's bosses didn't invest enough on their smaller ships during the 50's.
The money was instead spent on the bigger ones, like the rmsQuen Elizabeth, but too little too late!
Mauretania could have been a success like the ssAmerica was for Chandris!
And Caronia really could have been better than the old tired ssPasteur/Bremen.
Never understood why Chandris didn't buy them?
Wish Premier was about earlier!
