I was looking at all of the photos of the SS NORWAY again that Peter has put up on his site. However, I don't know what this is....I've cropped the photo and added an arrow to it. Hope all of you know what that is. I don't.

Someone had suggested in another post that it was the elevator shaft for the two decks added late in her career. It's possible, but it doesn't look to be one to me. It's seems so narrow.

That's what I thought too as one can see what appear to be doors (one on top of the other). Having never been on France/ Norway. I cannot comment on the size of the elevetaors; however, liners of that era did not have particularly large ones, so it does seem like that could be possible.

Yes, that is one of her elevator shafts. I've been aboard NORWAY literally dozens of times, and she had some of the tiniest elevators I've ever seen on a ship. It was much nicer to just use her grand staircases!

I didn't know for sure if it was an elevator shaft or not. This one is large and I agree with you Rich, I enjoyed going up and down the Grand Staircase. It always gave me a thrill.

I was looking at pictures on the maritime matters website of the Norway being progressively dismantled and in the early pics there was a piece of radar equipment on top of this structure.

IIRC, the Captain's Voyage forum moderator was on Norway's crew and identified this as the elevator shaft to the add-on Sun and Sky Decks. He also identified a service elevator shaft in that picture.

Those tiny elevators on older ships are one thing I won't miss. I never understood what the reason was to have one that held 3-4 passengers.

Speaking of small elevators, the PRIDE OF AMERICA also had some awfully tight elevators. I recall having 5 people was a squeeze.
