In a topic about ssNieuw-Amsterdam of 1938, it is alledged that she had only one working funnel, the rear one being a dummy.
I had a shock when I learnt that Normandie only had 2 working funnels(some people believed that is why she was slower than 3 working funnellened Queen Mary ;-0)
The beautiful post-war twin funnelled motorliners of Swedish American line also hada dummy funnel.
This makes them "Pretty" or shall we say "Keeping up appaerances"
Shall we list them as I always find something new about my favorites ships!

!

Well actually the third funnel on the Queen Mary was also a dummy (kind of). They used it for I beleive the Kitchens and ventilating the engine rooms. But it wasn't used in the same way as her 2 forward funnels. Queen Mary only needed 2 funnels to operated like her sister the Queen Elizabeth.

Oh and to name another ship or ships with a dummy funnel, the Olympic Class (Olyimpic, Titanic, Brittanic). The last funnel in their set of 4 was a dummy.

Literally hundreds of passenger liners with dozens of steamship lines had dummy funnels, usually added for appearances' sake. But the QUEEN MARY's funnels were all working funnels (Cunard never built any ships with dummy funnels.) She had a lot more boilers than QUEEN ELIZABETH, which is why she had a third funnel.

And the number of funnels has nothing to do with a ship's speed--that is largely the amount of horsepower which the engines produce--NORMANDIE was neck-and-neck just as fast as QUEEN MARY, and UNITED STATES certainly proved much faster, with only 2 stacks.

I think you will find that QM third funnel was indeed a working one. If you look at a cross section of her you will see that the majority of uptakes were lead up through her centre funnel however her most fwd and aft boiler rooms did use the fwd and aft funnels respectively.

The latest ships w/a dummy funnel(s) are of course the Disney Magic and Wonder. I assume their two recently announced newbuild's forward stacks will be dummies as well.

I also remember reading that the 3rd funnel on QM was a dummy but of course there are plenty of images that show smoke (kitchen or otherwise) coming from it. QM2's twin aft uptakes at times have plenty of galley exhaust coming from them as well. I was surprised that that much smoke could come from the Britannia and Grills kitchens.

Ok I should have made my self more clear. What I have always heard and read is that the Queen Marys 3rd funnel only vetilated the engine rooms but was not used for exhaust from the boilers. It was also used for the kitchens. Also in pictures you never see as much smoke coming from her third funnel as you do from the first two.

Boiler room No.5 (housing 6 boilers) utilized the aft funnel of Queen Mary, BR 3&4 use the centre funnel (12 boilers) and the fwd BR with 9 boilers, inclusive of the 3 “scotch type boilers uses the fwd. Its correct as well that part of the aft funnel was used for galley and engine room vents as can been seen by the large vents on the after end.

As for QM2, the two aft "goal post" style stacks are primarily used for exhausting the incinerators – hence the heavy smoke at times.

That is good to know. I thought that they were burning alot of food if they were just for galley exhaust!

Thanks guys for your your contributions to this fascinating subject.
I wish I had more time but without being cheeky Rich, ssUS two fat funnels were worth 4 funnels on Queen Mary ;-)
But the basic questions remains : was ssNieuw-Amsterdam a single funneler with a second dummy funnel like the post-war Swedish American liners?
I had a look at my books, none of which seems to have this type of interesting facts....

I guess you could say that, although her aft funnel wasn't connected to the boilers, it did vent other exhausts. More on the NIEUW AMSTERDAM's funnels in this thread:See Here

Currently....all three funnels on QM are dummy funnels, or replicas...the originals were scrapped.

Hi All

The smaller funnel on the ss Oriana was a dummy.

It housed some of the air conditioning equipment.

It was also in that area that we found 16 Fijians who had stowed away when we left Suva, on the 23rd January 1986.

They had hoped to get to Sydney to try and get work in the sugar fields in Queensland.

We caught all of them before we arrived in Sydney and they were returned to Suva on our next trip.

They were escorted back to Suva by eight Sydney police officers at a cost to P&O of Australian $ 21,760.00 !

13 of them were sentenced to four weeks in jail and the others got a two week sentence when they appeared in court in Suva.
