Dear Friend of the SS United States:

As we move from the dog days of summer into the fall, the SS United
States Conservancy has been diligently at work on several important
projects and initiatives in our ongoing commitment to saving the Big
U. We are pleased to bring you this latest update on the activities
of the SS United States Conservancy.

In this edition:

* 2007 Calendar Going to Press
* National Maritime Historical Society Event
* USS Intrepid Museum and the SS United States
* Honolulu Star Bulletin Profiles SS United States Library
* SS United States Documentary Steaming Full Speed Ahead
* 2006/07 Membership and Fund-raising Drive to Launch in November
* SS United States Merchandise Sale

2007 Calendar Going to Press

The 2007 SS United States Conservancy Calendar from Turner
Publishing, Inc. may now be pre-ordered! Packed with many never-
before-published photos from the Conservancy Archives Project and
other sources as well as recollections of builders, passengers, and
crew, the new calendar is scheduled to ship in October 2007. A
portion of the proceeds from the sales will go to support our ongoing
efforts on behalf of the Big U. Pre-order yours today by calling
Turner Publishing at (800) 788-3350 or visit their website.

National Maritime Historical Society Event

On November 18, Susan Gibbs, SS United States Conservancy President
and granddaughter of William Francis Gibbs, will join Conservancy
Board Member Charles Anderson, whose father, Commodore John W.
Anderson, was Master of the ship for many years, to share personal
recollections of the SS United States and discuss the Conservancy's
efforts to preserve her legacy. The event will take place in
Peekskill, New York and is open to the public. Details will be
posted on our website as soon as they are available.

USS Intrepid Museum and the SS United States

Our New York Outreach Committee will be meeting with the conservators
of the USS Intrepid this month to discuss collaboration on various SS
United States related fronts. The Intrepid has been permanently
moored at the Big U's former home of Pier 86 in Manhattan as an
historic monument and attraction. As the Intrepid will soon be
entering drydock for a planned refurbishing, the Conservancy will be
offering its support in ensuring that one of the SS United States'
propellers, which has been on display in front of the aircraft
carrier, will remain for future generations. We will also be
discussing a permanent exhibit aboard the ship which will highlight
the storied history of our nation's flagship with photos, videos, and
important artifacts depicting her flawless service career.

Honolulu Star Bulletin Spotlights SS United States Library

An article by Cheryl Chee Tsutsumi appeared in the August 27, 2006
edition of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin detailing the features of NCL
America's Pride of Hawaii, including a very nice mention of the SS
United States Library and the exhibits within which were produced by
the SS United States Conservancy. The article is available online,
and may be accessed by clicking here. NCL is the current owner of
the Big U, and has ambitious plans to renovate the ship and return
her to service as an American-flagged cruise ship. Please note that
the writer incorrectly provides a link to a site other than the
Conservancy's. As a side note, a gorgeous five foot full-hull model
of the Big U commissioned for NCL by the Conservancy is nearing
completion and will soon be permanently displayed in the library
onboard the Pride of Hawaii. Many thanks to Board member Greg Norris
for coordinating this important project, guaranteed to help keep the
legacy of the Big U in the public eye for seafaring travelers!

SS United States Documentary Steaming Full Speed Ahead

Collaborating with producer-director Robert Radler of Food Chain
Films in Los Angeles, the Conservancy is actively working toward the
completion of our documentary about the ship's storied history.
Tentatively entitled SS United States: Lady in Waiting, this one hour
film will chronicle the important history of the ship from conception
through the present day. Hours of filmed interviews are being
transferred so that editing of the final film can commence. Our film
is targeted for public television distribution through WTTV in
Chicago, with plans for international distribution through various
public television networks. The Conservancy is not affiliated with
another documentary film being developed by Rock Creek Productions,
Inc.

2006/07 Membership and Fund-raising Drive to Launch in November

Later in the fall the Conservancy will once again seek your generous
support of our ongoing efforts on behalf of the SS United States.
New members, supporters, and renewals will be vital to funding our
work to save the ship and preserve her legacy. When you receive our
mailing, we ask that you give as generously as you can. The SS
United States Conservancy is an initiative of the SS United States
Preservation Society, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in
1992. All contributions are fully tax deductible as allowed by law.

SS United States Merchandise Sale

As we prepare to launch a new line of exciting SS United States
commemorative merchandise, we will be conducting a store-wide sale of
existing items. All of our products will be discounted from October
1 through December 31, 2006, just in time for your holiday shopping!
To take advantage of this sale, please visit the Conservancy Slop
Chest offered through Café Press.com.

All of us at the Conservancy would like to thank you for your
continued support. Together we will see that the SS United States
endures for future generations!

With best regards,

SS United States Conservancy

I'm still debating whether or not I should join them. There's still the matter of a difference of opinion between the Conservancy and the Foundation as to whether or not to return her to service, and of course, at the rate NCL is going, it's questionable, regardless of what they say publicly.

BigUFan, are the Conservancy and Foundation completely separate things? I thought there was just one organisation.

I agree with what you wrote, especially after what they've said over the past few weeks regarding the newbuilds and now the logo which hints she won't. I admire them for trying to save her but I think it's a lost cause now unless someone buys her from Star/NCL. It does appear to be nothing more than lip service she'll be the 4th member of the NCLA fleet when they said their fleet is now fully in place. Now it's entirely possible they do still include the Big U in that but they do seem more interested in new, larger vessels. I'd love to see her gleaming again instead of being a rusting empty shell, even if she's just permanantly berthed somewhere as a museum or school or something. It's very sad seeing her the way she is right now.
