I have read that this coming season may be the last for the former Home Line's beauty. At age 41 (but in excellent condition) and with her aging steam engines harder to maintain the end may be coming soon. Anyone know for sure??

How unusual, we both made a post about a different Oceanic on the same day.

I don't know for sure, but I'm sure it will happen soon. A low profile cruise line, and and old ship. That just doesn't make for a good ending. She's going to be costing them more and more money now that she's older. Not to mention her old engines are probably not that efficient, and with the price of fuel today that can't end well.

Maybe Greenpeace will prevent her from the scrapyard? I am sure she has asbestos. Or is she not as famous enough a ship.

It may have a more positive cash flow to keep her running than lay her up? That was the SSNorway situation until the boiler blew.

Cheapie cruises with much onboard spending can stem losses?

Does the claim of her imminent retirement come from a reliable source? I really hate to see her go, especially since she's served all of her owners very well. Sadly, I guess all good thing come to an end though, huh?

Don`t forget SOLAS 2010. I do not have an detailed or confirmed informations on Oceanic - but to be on the safe side I would travel with all olf ships of interest BEFORE 2010.

Ships like Mona Lisa, Maksim Gorky or also the fantastic Sea Cloud come to my mind in this context .

Of course I would give the Sea Cloud priority - as I may again repeat - she is not 'only' a sailing ship as you can easily see by checking the links posted in the concerning thread on this forum. (sorry, off topic - but form time to time I have to.... ))

I have now seen that rumor debunked by its original source, so let's hope the Oceanic will sail on for at least a few more years...
