Ok I was visiting this website: http://www.maritimematters.com/mall_openthebook.html to try and find out more information about S/S Norway and found this book.

While some of us might know what the current understanding of the above term is - and please don't make me elaborate - I was intrigued as to what this term REALLY means...

Can anyone provide some insight?

I always understood it to mean crew accommodation in the days when it was dorm like, with rows of bunks and a single locker for your possessions; also the various areas that troops were bunked up in on ships?

If you can see the movie "A night to Remember" (1958) , you will see a steward try and muster crews memebers out of there bunk.If you look at the door in that scene you will see Glory Hole painted on the door.

Thanks to you both - I guess what I am really trying to figure out is WHY the terminology is used i.e. why is it called the "Glory Hole" as I am trying to understand HOW it applies to TODAY's use of the word. So guess I am not really asking WHAT it is - but rather WHY whatever is called what it was.

A Glory Hole is where you are away from it all and can be yourself. But I think today's usage may possibly come from glassmaking and the glory hole where the glass is kept hot enough for blowing. See here.

G.day everyone and a Happy New Year to you all from a very hot Melbourne 42c today.
Now as an OLD salt from way back I have to inform you that the Gloryhole was indeed the toilets and shower area generaly in the crew area, On Cunard we ( the crew ) had our own Gloryhole Steward who kept said toilet's and showers spotless, made our bunks, changing sheets weekly, and leaving a block of soap and Cunard match's on our bed. We inturn would tip him at the end of the voyage. B
