Thanks for posting the URL's for the PRESIDENT COOLIDGE. She was a wonderful ship and in fact had an older sister named the PRESIDENT HOOVER. They were very advanced for their time and were, at their launching, the largest ships built in the U.S.A.
Unfortunately, they both had short lives. The PRESIDENT HOOVER, on the night of 11 December 1937, ran aground and stranded on Hoishoto Island off the northeast coast of Taiwan. She was unable to be salvaged and was declared a total loss and ultimately broken up by Japanese salvors. The PRESIDENT COOLIDGE, as the web site shows, was lost in 1942 at Espirito Santo due to hitting a mine,(even more unfortunately, it was one of our mines.)
Dollar Lines became American President Lines in the late 30's and as reported in the APL history book, the christening of the two vessels was interesting for its time: "On 6 December 1930 Mrs. Herbert Hoover smashed a bottle of water that the Dollar public relations department claimed had been collected from the seven seas across the bow of the PRESIDENT HOOVER as she slid down the ways at Newport News. A little over a year later, Mrs. Calvin Coolidge christened the PRESIDENT COOLIDGE at her launching with a bottle of water taken from the Black River, which ran through the former president's Vermont farm. On such public occasions during Prohibition water flowed as champagne had done earlier."
