I have received a copy of a letter, from one of the Australian travel agents, which was sent out by Voyages to Antiquity saying that they have cancelled some cruises for 2013 due to their only ship ' Aegean Odyssey ' being chartered.

This also happened to some of their cruises this year.

They are offering discounts to those who's cruises have been cancelled, if they book another cruise, but for those who are unable to change their holiday plans no compensation has been offered even though some people had already paid for the cruise.

With this company operating just the one cruise ship it would seem that you are far better booking with another company who does not charter out their ship so you get the holiday you have booked !

Their Managing Director is David Yellow who was with Voyages of Discovery when their cruise ship mv Discovery was running with an engine problem and missing advertised ports of call.

The first passengers heard of this problem was when they boarded the ship and found a notice in their cabins advising them of the itinerary changes which also spoilt many passengers holidays.

.. and how many have already paid for a cruise in 2013 and unable to change their plans? possibly none. The number of passengers this affects must be minimal, no cruise line would turn down a charter afraid of upsetting a handful of passengers who at this stage, over a year in advance, may have to change their own plans anyway.

Now, if it was next month it would be a different matter.

You seem to be forgetting that these bookings came from Australia and some people can only arrange their holidays at certain times of the year.

As I said we received the letter from a travel agent who had made the booking and some of his clients could not change their holiday plans.

This is the second year that this company have messed up some of the peoples holiday plans and is certainly no way to encourage people to book with them in the future !

As has been commented many a time on CT, cruises get cancelled for various reasons, charters being one of them, over running refits another, and miscalculating how long a refit is going to take in the first place. Some passengers get 3 months notice; then it can be difficult to change things.

People in the UK often have set holidays too, but I cannot get the slightest bit upset about something so far in advance. Many other lines will change their 2013 schedules before the time arrives. Airlines have not released their schedules, so nothing booked is set in stone.

Perhaps those affected would like to make comment and state their case.

Pam

Well, maybe you should then say so - 'our' (!) webpage is certainly not clear in that context.

To the topic: Of course it is not ideal to cancel cruises but 2013 is indeed far away. Other lines cancel with much less lead time - e.g. the delayed refit of Oriana comes to my mind.

Hi Ernst

Many members on here know already that I am from the ' cruisingtalk ' website which is often quoted by other forums.

Sorry you did not know what 'Our ' referred too.

Perhaps you should join us as well !

Re the cancelled cruise this was the second time that some of those Australians had a cruise cancelled, due to the ship being chartered out, so I doubt if you would be happy if it happened to you two years running.

Cancelled cruises as a result of re-fits delays are completely different .
