Even though soccer is not that popular here in the US. (Although a lot of kids play),we can't seem to field a World Cup team that is formidable.
We have a lot of Socceroos on this site that have a great team. Too bad for the loss to Italy in the last few seconds of their game. The refs don't appear to be that good at making calls. IMHO

Well, the aim is to score goals and we didn't against Italy. We can only blame ourselves for not winning the match in the 90 odd minutes of play, and especially when we were eleven against ten in the second half. As for the injury time penalty - if you are Australian, it wasn't. If you are Italian it was. The way I see it, is that the ref had no option.

As for the refereeing at this World Cup, it's not too dissimilar to several of the past few where FIFA (the governing body of world football) has issued directives two to three months before the tournament giving referees and players little time to adjust. It seems refs lose their head every four years. Pity.

Yes, but oddly it does not happen much in soccer, does it?

My team in a sweepstake at work was the Australia, and I thought they played well, even if Italy showed their difference in experience.
Sad way to go out as that was clearly no penalty.
The socceroo's did Australia proud, and I'm sure will be back better and stronger next time.

So, now the emotional roller coaster continues for us "Englanders"...

No. no. no . . . . please !

I thought I could rely on Cruise Talk to be a World Cup-free zone, but it has been invaded - ironically by the Aussies only after the Socceroos were eliminated.

What next? Big Brother rants?

Let's keep Cruise Talk for talking about cruises.

O.K. lets introduce a bit of cruising into the debate:

I understand that the UK Travel agents have big problems selling holidays and cruises during the world cup. However once it is over (or we are knocked out, whichever happens sooner) the demand will return.

I notice the ex-UK cruises are making a point of advertising that you can watch the world cup matches onboard.

Cruising around in my non-SOLAS compliant 4 wheeled vessel, I smile when I pass the local hostelry in the next port along on the Ouse; it has a huge welcoming banner stating "Football Free Zone". Unfortunatly not the nearest Duty Free outlet for the dock, but there would be no problem bringing purchased goods aboard.

[MrP has 2 teams in his works sweepstake.. Italy & Brazil; it almost caused a riot and calls for redraw... although any 'winnings' plus more would be spent over a lunchtime drink for everyone, so it means nothing really ]

Aren't they making any money from those travelling to Germany?

Good point! I suppose Ferry and low cost air bookings to Germany are up, which are often booked directly. However I think the number of Brits who will not be going away to Spain etc during the world Cup, easily outnumbers those who did go to Germany.

I'm pretty sure package holidays, including family holidays and Cruises, often booked via a Travel agent are down.

Following England abroad is certainly not the ideal family vacation in my opinion!

I just thought it would be a nice gesture for our Aussie friends on the site. I would do the same for any other country that had a good team only to lose by a questionable call.
Please note I'm a Yank who is just starting to understand that soccer is an International sport bigger than any baseball, auto racing or football. Cruise on friends

Some of my friends have commented that this years World Cup is the 1st time they have really paid any attention to this sport. It could be we have so many more people here in L.A. now that follow it than in the past. L.A. once was referred to as 'Iowa-by-the-sea' and now are certainly more International w/some International interests.

Yes, we we say the 'World Cup' we mean the 'World', unlike the 'World Series'.

I'm off on holiday tomorrow... 2 weeks in Spain (not a cruise this time).

Family of 3, package holiday, 2 weeks, £2000+

Instead, I have booked low cost flights on the web. Rented an apartment. Including hiring a (small) car for 2 weeks...... £600 all in.

The travel companies have for years overcharged immensely, especially during school holiday periods. Is it any wonder that we are getting wiser and cutting out the middle man?

World cup...pah! Bookings through high street travel agents have been on their way down for the last few years, since the rise of the low cost airlines.
