What happened to Chandris Cruises and their other divisions? I know Celebrity used to be part of Chandris and is currently owned by RCCL, but I always wondered why Chandris sold Celebrity to RCCL?

Chandris has a lot of Newbuildts in the 1990's, most of them in Germany at Meyer, Papenburg.

They sell to RCCL for an minimal Sum, i remember about 100 Million Dollars US.

But RCCL took extra their Debts.

They built the new Ships (Horizon, Zenith, Century, Galaxy, Mercury) in an short Time and have Problems with the Money.

Under RCCL the next Series was built (Millenium, Summit, Infinity, Constellation).

In former Times, Chandris was the biggest Cruise Company in the World, but only with old Tonnage.
This was BEFORE an Carnival and others are existing.

Some of the famous old Chandris Ships are

AMERIKANIS
BRITANIS
AUSTRALIS
ITALIS
MERIDIAN
VICTORIA
ROMANZA
ARIADNE

and others...

For me, until today the best Company in Relation between Price and what you get for your Money!!!

Some days ago I saw a Greek Oil Tanker at S. Sebastiao port (Brazil) with Chandris color scheme, including the famous X on funnel.
The name was in Greek so I couldn’t identify this ship.
Can somebody tell me if Chandris is still in business with tankers?

Chandris has a large fleet of cargo and tanker vessels operating worldwide.
Their main office-building is still in Pireaus.
I have ben there last time in 1999 and you can see there pictures of all there pax-vessels. Further more, the nautical crew of the now RCI-ships are still provided by Chandris as the line is still involved in the technical management of all Celebrity ships.

Patrick, so you are saying Chandris is still involve with RCI in the Celebrity division, but they are out of the cruise business, in terms of their own?

I looked for Chandris cargo and tankers but only found this photo of a "super tanker" named Patris with what seems to be a black hull

Patris appears to be the only ULCC/VLCC owned by Chandris, though I did think they had 2 biggies. Go to Tanker World for the details. They do also have some smaller Afromax tankers according to that site, Astrea & Althea?, but there are more & various bulk carriers around.

Nesklau, Patris seems to have been chartered by Petrobras a few months ago which is probably when you would have seen her.

Very good information from PamM & AJL, thanks.
Tanker Presindente Tancredo Neves used to belong to Petrobras (Fronape). Maybe she has a Greek name by now.
As I live in an island in front of S. Sebatiao Port, I will keep my eyes open and will try to take a photo of this beautiful tanker to include in this topic.

Hi Draikar to mine information the Bremen have never saild in the new HAPAG colors. She was al ready sold whene the company colors where chansed. The Europa was repainted after a refit in 1972. By that time Bremen was sold to Chandris. Have look on other sites to find a picture that she have repainted in the new colors, buth could not find one.

Bremen sailed as a Cruise Ship rathen than a liner in 1970, She sailed in Caribbean waters out of New York in winter 69/70 she ended her Winter/Spring season on Apr.23 when she departed for her first trans Atlantic run in the seasons of 1970. thereafter she sailed 5 round trip crossings until Sep.18. then she started her Caribbean cruise seasons until Dec.13

Ah, the Malolo. A proper ship, when ships were ships and looked like ships! One of the three, to this Eastcoaster, Matson dream ships. Lurline (always liked that name), Monterey, and Malolo.

CGT, you were a Hawaii resident. I am confused as to whether the Malolo and the Matsonia were the same ship. I heard, long before this board, that there was a renaming.

But stories of sailings to Hawaii, the leis tossed into the sea, the Aloha tower. I always wanted to do this. My first Pacific crossing was aboard the General R.M. Blatchford, AP-153, to do things in the South Pacific!

Malolo was renamed Matsonia after her 1937 refit. This refit added an additional deck as well as modern gravity davits. I always wondered why her designer used the older style davits when she was 1st built in the late 1920s. Mr. Gibbs was always into safety and that always perplexed me.

Lurline was a family name, Lurline Matson Roth died within the last 10 years or so. Their incredible Northern California estate was used for the exterior shots as the 'Carrington' home on TVs 'Dynasty' in the 1980s. Malolo's fleetmates were the early great 1930s trio; Lurline, Monterey and Mariposa. These three were larger improved versions of the older Malolo. These ships were built for the Hawaiian market as well as the longer service out to the South Pacific. They of course went on to enjoy incredibly long careers. The final passenger ship called Lurline was retired from Matson service in 1970 and sold to Chandris Lines to become Britanis. The newer Monterey and Mariposa of the late 1950s were sold to Pacific Far East line (USA) and continued on until the late 1970s until being laid up and later sold off.

The two photo's are fake I made a long time ago, the first in Chandris colors is fake since she never had a blue line strip on her hull ( i don't think ). I could not find info about Bremen in new HAPAG colors, just that she was sold the same year or year before Europa was painted in new HAPAG colors so I guess she did not have the HAPAG colors but she dose like nice that way.

Regina Prima was built in 1939 as the PANAMA of the Panama Railroad Co.,
APL Acquired her in Jan 1957 and renamed President Hoover.
She was sold to Chandris on Dec 3, 1964 and renamed Regina.
Regina cruised for Chandris from 1966 until 1979, having been renamed Regina Prima in 1973 to avoid confusion with the Regina Magna.
Scrapped at Aliaga-Izmar, Turkey in Apr 1985.

Actually, Chandris was supposed to operate the Favorita (ex Daressa of British India) but instead she was laid up for four years, until in 1968 sold to Singapore and became the Kim Hwa and was scrapped in 1974.

Carina was bult in 1929 as Princess Helene for the Canadian Pacific's Saint John-Digby run.
She was withdrawn in Feb 1963, She was sold in May and left Saint John on Jul 11 under the name Helene, to become a car ferry in the Mediterranean after being renamed Carina.
