I'm not quickly moved by video of saluting ships. But now I was deeply moved by this one. This video shot on January 27 2010 Queen Mary 2 is greeted by Queen Elizabeth 2. As if she say hallo big sister I'm still around. Quite moving watch,

QE2's deep thunderous whistle still puts QM2's to shame.

I thought the horn used on QM2 was the one from the original QM?

One of the whistles on QM2 was taken from QM and shipped to France for installation when the ship was under construction. The other whistle is a copy made by the same company as the original. IMO, QM2's whistles are weak compared to QE2's magnificent deep-thundering sound.

I wonder then, with that said, how close the QM2's whistle (actually the whistle from QM) sounds compared to when the whistle was actually used on QM? Is it the same sound generated as when used on QM? If it is, could you then say that QE2's whistle puts the QM's whistle to shame?

The whistles that are on the QM2 don't always work properly...since day one they've had issues with the whistles working together in-sync. So most of the time you're only hearing one of the whistles blowing. It sounds way better when BOTH whistles are blown at the same time....that way you get a decent sound.....even on the actual Queen Mary in Long Beach her whistles don't sound the same as they did way back when she was in service because now they are powered with high-pressure air pumped through them....they originally had high-pressure steam blown through them....giving them a different sound.

As Barry posted, QM2's whistle has issues. There are several videos on Youtube that feature both ships whistles for comparison (listen to one video on Youtube called 'QE2 with a big horn leaving New York' that is one amazing whistle!!!). Some videos feature both ships saluting each other then there are videos featuring the ships seperately. I've also heard both whistles many times in person and IMO QE2's fabulous tone is in a completely different league. If QM2's worked properly (maybe we are only hearing 50% power) then she might compare to her older fleetmate but she has'nt yet.

When you are in the area under the bridge on QM2 you can really only hear the horn at the front of the ship, if you are under the funnel you can hear the QM horn, they sound very different
