Because they can. They know we cant live w/o our cars so they just keep jerking up the prices.

When gas topped $4/gallon, people stopped buying SUVs and curbed driving and the economy began to tank.
The economy is now improving, people are driving more and buying trucks and SUVs again.
As long as the American driving public puts up with gas prices in the $3-$4/gallon range, the gas companies will charge whatever the market will bear.
I don't like it anymore than anyone else, but I made the choice of liking to drive a 400 hp, 6000 pound SUV and thus, literally pay the piper twice a week at the pump.
Until we, as a society, show the oil companies that we won't take it anymore, they will do what they please.

My car has a just over a 1 litre engine and I find that expensive to fill!
Gas is still cheaper!

Wow! And I thought paying 30$ to fill mine up was a lot! I'm lucky enough to live in a very small town and drive maybe 100 miles a week, so a tank of gas last me about 2-3 weeks.

Good point Ernie! It takes nature millions of years to make a cup of gas and starbucks a couple of minates to make a latte!

Well the good thing about living in a city like S.F is that there is always a bus, or a trolley that is going where you need to go. We have B.A.R.T and Muni too. So if I dont want to drive I dont have too. One tank of gas can last me three weeks if I ride the local transportation most of the time. So its not as bad as it seems.
Pump Prices Going...Down?
I guess the skeptic in all of us will wait to believe that when it happens!

Fortunately, my car's tank isn't that big. The most I've paid for one fill is only about £60.

During my tour in the USN I lived in the Bay Area for 4 years, mostly in Oakland and Concord, the latter being a terminus for one line of the BART system. I've had the chance to return on vacation several times and love taking the wide variety of public transportation the area offers. The last time I was there it was 6 years ago just before they instituted the new high speed Baby Bullet Trains between San Jose and SF.
My next move will be to a city that has a large system such as this so I wont have to have a car at all.
