quote:MSC plans to make it big in India TIMES NEWS NETWORKMarch 20, 2006MUMBAI: Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the first shipping company to start conventional container service (between NW Europe and South Africa) is all set to shore up its presence in India in a big way. The container major, which operates over 300 container vessels, 29 container terminals worldwide, and the renowned fly cruises in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean have made a significant beginning in the country in January last year with the establishment of MSC Ship Management (India) for the handling of its manning operations. Ashok Jha, managing director of MSC Ship Management (Hong Kong), said, “MSC (India), the subsidiary of the MSC (Hong Kong), presently undertakes the manning for 82 ships. All the officers and crew employed on these are Indians. By the end of this year the company will take 20 to 25 new additions. Since there is plenty of potential in the Indian market for hotel and other staff we are looking into engaging seafarers and other staff for our cruise fleet of 7 with 5 new additions to be made in the coming years.” MSC, which is privately owned by the ship owners themselves, boasts of a capacity of more than 1 million TEUs with over another 50 vessels under construction. However, container terminal (CT) operations are considered as an extension of their main business. They operate CTs in strategic locations across the world such as hub ports in the US, Germany, Italy, etc. and wherever there could be congestion in the normal channels. In Singapore they have a joint venture with PSA International and owns three container terminals. “You may have all the cargo and all the ships you can possess, but if you don’t have the terminals then your ships could be kept waiting,” says Mr Jha. “The spectacular growth of MSC has not come through acquisitions or mergers. The network of liner services was built step by step and the company has always kept an independent and individualistic approach. Today MSC is second only to AP Moeller.” According to a spokesperson of the company, plans are already underway for setting up a network of offices all over India. Within a year of inception, the company has set up offices in Delhi, Chennai, Kochi, and Kolkata, besides Mumbai. The headquarters of MSC (India) will soon be relocated at the company’s own building - MSC House which is under construction at Andheri, Mumbai. Once completed, the company plans to start its own training centre and handle various allied activities from this location. The Economic Times
