MS Bergensfjord - picture from nordjyske.dk

The two new Fjord Line cruise ferries Stavangerfjord & Bergensfjord were launched at Gdansk Shipyard and are presently outfitted at the Bergen Group shipyard in Rissa, Norway. Both new cruise ferries have engines powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and will be operated on the Bergen - Stavanger - Hirtshals route.

It's great to see that some ferries are showing how good looking new builds can be, especially Norwegian ferries. These ships, Color Superspeed and the proposed newbuild Color Line Sandefjord ships really are rather nice. The onboard areas of these Fjord ships are to be by Falkum Hansen, who have some great references. The Sirius accommodation things look interesting too.

And that would be another vessel operating on LNG. Has the yard been announced yet?

No sign of a firm order yet. We might hear more when the annual results come out. In the meantime, I wondered whether they might be considering the Berlin and Copenhagen. No new owner for those has come forward yet.

Lovely looking ships apart from that horrible gas venting tower in front of the funnel. What a pity it couldn't be incorporated into the funnel itself - I assume the regulators wouldn't allow that.

The big difference between these ships and Viking Grace is the location of the gas tanks. On Viking Grace they were at the stern, on these ships they are below the car deck. Viking Grace's gas vent is thus able to be arranged to look like an aft mast.

She is really very nice. Here's a whole series of photos of her first arrival at Bergen.

She seems to be running behind schedule due to the length of time it is taking to refuel. In Norway she is not permitted to have any passengers aboard during refueling, which is of course hampering turnarounds.

Which reminds me - does VIKING GRACE actually run on LNG now? She didn't initially as the terminals were not ready and I don't recall seeing any announcement to say she now was.

I think she runs on LNG since April.
They use a bunkering vessel for ship to ship bunkering of LNG.

The Norwegian authorities will now allow LNG bunkering whilst passengers are onboard. This will most likely take place a Stavanger where the terminal is adjacent to a Skangas plant. This will end the practice of sending trucks to Denmark with the gas for refuelling.

In the meantime, the engines continue to prove troublesome. Today's trip to Denmark was aborted about an hour into the voyage after problems with the engine software resulted in 2 engines shutting down and the ship being effectively adrift for a couple of hours. The ship returned to Stavanger and Rolls Royce engineers are en route to try to find the problem. In the meantime, Bergensfjord is taking tonight's sailing from Denmark when she would otherwise have laid over.
