In July I had a lovely cruise aboard LOUIS OLYMPIA. Great ship and itinerary. I know some on CT have worked aboard in her days as SONG OF AMERICA and some have sailed her as either SUNBIRD or THOMSON DESTINY. You can still read 'OF AMERICA' and SUNBIRD on her bow. If you would like to see the photos as she is today look here [or here].

Some things have changed, others haven't.

Pam

Still a handsome ship even with the stretch.

We tried to sail Louis in 2008. There marketing is very poor in North America.

They mailed me a brochure with a list of travel agents of which none returned my calls.

She was always an odd ship. Not enough double beds and too many upper and lowers. However, she looks good on the inside. At least since her time with RCI she looks good.

I used to go aboard when she was in port in Miami. She had a particular charm, but she was a one off model. You knew at some point that RCI was going to get rid of her because of her odd cabin situation.

I did not like the way the covered the back deck with that monstrosity of a canopy to make more inside space. They should have left her decks open.

The older RCI ships are battle horses at least someone is making use of them still today.

She was not stretched. Only the first two Song of Norway and Nordic Prince were stretched and then RCCL ordered a new ship and never borthered to stretch the Sun Viking.

The new ship was of course the Song of America seen here. She was a comfortable modern update in the early 1980s to the smaller ships but the cabins were still closets, one bed and one fold down as I recall. Pretty much single beds and opposed to king size or even queen size or doubles.

I remember her before the casino was added. Passengers at our dining room table were soooooooo unhappy they left the trip mid cruise and flew to a casino resort for the rest of their week!

I was aboard when RCCL started doing a survey of what worked and what did not on the Song of America for a "top secret" new ship program .... of course that became Sovereign of the Seas.

Wow it feels like yesterday and they are now the Old Ladies of the Seas!

PS -- the reception area looks exactly the same from that angle. I remember that glass tower art piece and even the carpet is the same color .... its like a time portal to 1985

Great pictures, Pam. Thanks for sharing. She still has that "RCI feel" with her interiors.

IMO, she looked best with the RCI livery. The navy? blue paint dividing her superstructure helped her looks.

AMAZING pictures, Pam! Thanks for sharing all of them. Although I never got the chance to see her in real life as Song of America I was always fascinated by this ship. Not sure why?

My father was the first food and beverage manager of the Song of America, shortly after it got to Miami he moved into the offices to work from land.

In 1985 he went over to Sundance cruises to work with the MS Stardancer.
