The wreck will be removed in one piece, refloated and towed away.
Titan Salvage is an American-owned specialist marine salvage and wreck removal company, part of the Crowley Group. Micoperi is an Italian marine contractor with a long history as a specialist in underwater construction and engineering.
Throughout the operations, environmental protection will have top priority. Once the main work is complete, the sea bottom will be cleaned and marine flora replanted.
The plan also includes measures to safeguard the island of Giglio’s tourism and wider economy. Salvage workers’ presence will not have any significant impact on the availability of hotel accommodation on the island during the summer season. The main operating base will be located on the mainland at nearby Civitavecchia, where equipment and materials will be stored, thereby avoiding any impact on Giglio’s port activities.
Once floated, the wreck will be towed to an Italian port and dealt with in accordance with the requirements of the Italian authorities.
The plan was selected by an Evaluation Team with specialist representatives from Costa Crociere, Carnival Corporation & plc, London Offshore Consultants, and the Standard P&I Club. All six tenders submitted by the March 3 deadline were of a very high standard, but the Evaluation Team decided that the Titan Salvage/Micoperi proposal best fulfilled the main objectives set out in the tender specifications: removal of the wreck in one piece; minimal risk; minimal environmental impact; protection of Giglio’s economy and tourism industry; maximum safety of the work.
The removal will be the final step of the salvage. Its fuel removal was completed successfully on 24 March. “Caretaking" operations, which include cleaning up the seabed and removing debris caused by the incident, will continue until Titan Salvage and Micoperi commence operations.(Source: Cruise Industry News)

So, Carnival will make money out of this! They'll probably sell it to pay TV first and then to others, etc. I wonder if any of that money will go to compensate any of the passengers, maybe those that have filed suit? Food for thought.

I very much doubt that Carnival intends to earn money on that.
How much say would Costa & CC actually have had within the 'Evaluation Team'? Does the insurance cover all the salvage, or do Carnival/Costa have to pay a percentage?
Many questions I have not seen any answers to

I actually expect many movies will be of the Discovery/Nat Geo variety like prior ones done for the Kursk and Ehime Maru

I think if they profit from it the government will be after them. Their are laws in the US at least that makes it illegal to profit from a crime. This includes selling book or movie rites for a murder you did. I think the argument could easily be made that any movie rites sold by Carnival Corp for the Costa Concordia accident would fall under the illegal category since they would be profiting from their crime of negligent homicide.
I'm so intrigued by the engineering aspect of this event, wonder how they're going to do it!
Tonight in fact there was a show on MSNBC dealing with all the cruise ship disasters that have happened. And Nat Geo and Discovery Canada all have their hands in this story.
And I am sure that whatever happens next will make it to film in any case. They have beaten the dead horse and are milking it for all that it is worth. The salvage is going to be big news. The disaster still gets top billing on the Main CTV National News here in Canada.
This board went nuts on the sinking aspect as seen on how many comments were left on that thread, and I am sure that everybody is waiting on the next chapter of this story.
The boards have been very quiet in recent weeks. We need something to spark discussion again.
I think people are already speculating on just what should happen, where it should go and how do they get it there.
And just over a year from now as they tow Costa Concordia away I can only imagine the aerial and media circus that will play out in front of our eyes.

I am afraid so and I am sure the executives at Costa and Carnival are dreading it. Contrary to the idea they are somehow profiting from the movie rights they must be hating every minute of the publicity and each new development pushes Costa a little further under.
From a marketing perspective they just want it to go away and the images of a wreaked ship being towed to port for further investigation is the worst scenario they could dream up in their nightmares.
Not to wish it on the poor folks of the Island but I am sure the Costa / Carnival folks were hoping for a really big storm to break the ship to bits and be done with her.
To me the question is if the folks on the island are like the folks in Asbury Park circa 1934 and trying to hawk souvenirs and encourage tourists to see the disaster at their shores ,,,,,

Show is called Salvage Code Red, you can stream it on Discovery Canada's video section. It's not just Titan that was featured, SMIT was in several episodes as well.
