I know there are several readers on this site that have access to inside industry information not generally available in the consumer press. All the news releases on the new Princess builds has a focus on passenger comforts and features.

However, I am very curious as to the propulsion system aboard. Does any one KNOW whether the ship will have pods or conventional shafts and screws? Many thanks.

She will have two traditional shafts with propellers, and twin rudders. I attended Cruise Shipping Miami today (formerly known as SeaTrade), where Fincantieri unveiled their huge builders' model of ROYAL PRINCESS.

I will post some photos of the model shortly.

Thanks for the information. About 1 1/2 yrs ago, I was told that there was very heated debate within Carnival Corp over the issue. The engineering types at Princess (mostly Italian and some even ex Sitmar) wanted conventional, but there were some that insisted on pods. I heard the P & O also wanted conventional propulsion for their delivery . Looks like they won out!! Holland America will have to adjust when their turn comes for one of this class.

Even within the Carnival brand itself, I think only 6 out of 23 vessels have pods; the rest have conventional shafts and rudders.
