I had previously read she was depart on her first set of sea trials February 12th (this coming Friday). Does anyone have updated information as to if this is still taking place?

Also, what is the time-line from now to her delivery?

From what I've read last week on Mer et Marine, first sea trials are for Feb 12th indeed, then work in drydock, then second sea trials mid April, then delivery to NCL on June 15th if all goes well.

So is she going back to dry dock after her sea trial or just wet dock?

If she follows the same pattern as the QM2, probably back into drydock. Didnt QM2 go back in after her first (or second?) sea trials for hull cleaning or something? If I remember correctly it was about that time she had the disasterous gangway collapse.

I just hope they don't turn the Epic too sharply during her trials.

In spite of some union actions during the past two days (not all unions, only the two "hardest" ones, with about 50 workers preventing access to the ship for some hours), she's departed last night for her first sea trials. She should be back on Sunday.
Article and latest photos (from yesterday under snow) here:

http://www.meretmarine.com/article.cfm?id=112400

And yes, unless a blatant (so rather improbable, even if some cases exist in shipping history)design mistake has been made, she'll be able to turn sharply, no less than any other recent big cruise ship. Appearence is one thing, balance of weight is a whole different matter of course. As any newly built large cruise ship, the main big problem created by her high supertructures is maneuvring during strong winds and eccessive sensibility to these winds, not the balance of weight and her resulting stability, be it static or dynamic.

I did see on AIS earlier that she is indeed out doing her 1st sea trials. I wonder when we will start seeing pictures?

Sorry, but it's still ugly. The stern matches the soap box forward.

On the run furthest left, the last triangle before reaching the top and then turning back east registered 23.8 knots:

I fear it will be other ships that will capsize at the sight of the EPIC.

It may be NCL's strategy....'Project Medusa'.

I'm growing weary of the bashing of Epic's exterior looks. While no beauty, neither is Princess' Grand Class, Celebrity's Solstice Class, or even the pale blue Oasis (not a looker from most angles... especially the stern view0

I've been on 25 cruises and few ships have excited me more about the prospect of something truly new than Epic. After 40 years of the same, the cabins are fresh and exciting. The dining options are unmatched. The shows are a nice break from tired, Broadway cleavage and plumage numbers. The pool deck looks like a blast. The villas are the most complete enclave of any ship (private dining, bars, gym, pool and lounges).

I'll take the fresh thinking of Epic (even with her hat profile) over the same rehashed ideas of most ships any day.

Just planned a cruise for 20 family members next year. After looking at Oasis, Solstice class, and Princess latest... everyone picked Epic as their first choice.

I think this ship will be a success for NCl and I can't wait to sail her.

Unfortunately we will be hearing the arm-chair critics as well as the afficienados describe the Norwegian Epic with every synonym of 'ugly' from now until the cows come home. And it will be the same ones saying it over, and over, and over. Get over it already.

Here's an AIS grab from Feb 14, 2010 approx 6:15am GMT. The semicircle loop (far left) was taken at the speeds beginning from 14.7kts accelerating to 22.3 knots by the end of the turn...

And why not?

Although subjective, I would suggest that it is a 'fact' that Epic is considered by many to be one of the ugliest purpose-built cruise ships ever built. ('Pride of America' comes second in my opinion). Epic's exterior design has almost zero regard for aesthetics.

Even NCL think she is 'ugly'. NCL’s then CEO Colin Veitch said a while back "…they (two F3’s at the time) may not end up as the most beautiful ships on the outside. Our goal is to build the best, most innovative ship, not the prettiest to watch sail by.” He was obviously feeling a bit guilty about the design.

dmwnc1, do you disaprove how 'arm-chair' critics as well as the 'afficienados' cannot ever mention 'Normandie' without using every synonym of 'beutiful' - or is it OK to mention beauty, but not ugliness, in your virtual world?

I think we all realise that 'Epic' is an exciting newbuild and her exterior 'ugliness' (oops, I said it again) is not necessarily related to her interior design or onboard experience. However only time will tell.

Yes , but you too say the same thing every time, and seem to accept that as long as it exists and is a new cruise ship then all is wonderful. It didn't have to be this ugly.

I dont deny saying that the Norwegian Epic is a somewhat unattractive ship, specifically referring to the build-up over her bridge area. I have no problem with the rest of the ship. I personally cant change the fact the the ship is what it is and havent harped on her appearance in every post for the last year. I may have used the word 'ugly' once to describe her (again referring to the over-bridge addition), and may have used the word 'ugly' two or three times in the last seven years I have been a member here to describe any newbuild. I do remember using the word 'hideous' to describe the Veendam refit addition and the Ecstasy-class balcony additons. I also have not said that every newbuild is 'wonderful'. Several times I have used phrases like 'it's nothing special' or 'average' looking, but dont oogle and fawn over every (or any) newbuild.

Those who have no other comment than to say 'It's ugly' and just keep repeating the same comment, and we get it already. Sure opinions are subjective, but to keep repeating the same single comment like a broken record for the last year is stale at best. I have also poked fun at those who mention every newbuild in the same breath as the classics of days gone by...

I posted this three years ago and it still holds true of how most members react to any newbuild:

To save time here are just a few typical post-floatout responces:

-Wow that's UGLY!

-I hope they finish painting her!

-How come she doesnt have lifeboats?

-Their other ships look better. Not another clone!

-The stove-pipes out of the funnel are too big.

-I bet the food is going to be horrible...

-The stern is flat, she's built too high over the bridge.

-Weak bow. Too long, short, white, looks like NCL.

-I could have designed her better than that.

-She doesnt have a soul, no character.

-Her social standing/class is not to my liking.

-The QM2 (Normandie, all old ocean liners) look better.

-Their marketing campaign is too 'Italian', European, etc.

-Wow, she's BEAUTIFUL!

P.S. Here is an AIS grab from approx 1330GMT on 14 February 2010. Note the speed of 24.1 knots indicated on the bottom left position indicator.

My point is that it is needlessly ugly. The " carbuncle " just looks like an add on rather than part of the original ship. Just looks like they couldn't be bothered. Reminds me so much of the added upper decks to the Norway. Maybe it's some weird tribute . Who knows.

Norwegian Epic took on her pilot from the Couronnee at approx 1435GMT and headed inbound to St. Naizaire, completing her first set of Sea Trials. She should arrive back dockside approx 1545GMT.

I do feel NORWEGIAN EPIC is one of the least attractive ships (on the exterior) we have seen in quite some time. Is this stopping me from booking a cruise on her? Absolutely not. In fact I'm booked for this November. On the inside EPIC looks very promising and there is a lot of innovation. I think she will be one of the few ships that can give OASIS a run for her money. My biggest concern is the amount of passengers she will carry. Even with the innovation, she has a fairly traditional layout and I'm not sure how that will hold up with 4200 passengers onboard. Unlike RCI, NCL is not exactly known for their organizational skills. If they put half as much effort into logistics that RCI did with OASIS, then we should be ok.

I think with just slightly more effort they could have made the ship much more attractive on the exterior, without having to change a whole lot.

Ernie:

Do you think the density of Epic will be that different from Oasis? On your recent sailing, I believe you said there were 5,900 guests on Oasis. My calculation puts the space ratio at 38.1.

In comparison, Epic's would be 35.7 (unless 3rd/4th guests increased occupancy above 100%)

Aside from appearance, I wonder how much drag is added with the "Block House". Seems like not a very good use of aerodynamics in regard to fuel economy. Then there's the issue of how it will handle in Heavy seas???
BTW we keep hearing about inovations. Well unless I missed them --please tell us!
