Transocean Tours briefly issued a press release earlier today, stating that during a routine drydocking, a major issue with "Astoria's" main engines has been discovered, resulting in the cancellation of the upcoming, 123-night world cruise.
Later today, the press release was removed from the Transocean web site for whatever reason.

Hi Raoul
Must have certainly been serious to cancel the world cruise! With only two 14 night cruises in April before she leaves Transocean and then six months in dry dock for Saga's refurbishment, Astoria won't get many sea days in 2009!!

as bad as these news are for ASTORIA, it could be the chance for MAXIM GORKIY to take over the schedule. Well, Sovcomflot didn't want to continue doing worldcruises with the lady any longer but this could solve the problems for both, the owners and Transocean Tours.Let's wait and hope!

Phoenix might really regret they let MAXIN GORKIY go, particularly if she went to Transocean!!
I know they are different things but there are all of a sudden a significant number of dry cargo and container ships being laid up and or sold/for sale. The cargo rates are in some cases less than 20% of what they were 12 months ago and there is a huge amount of new tonnage being delivered in the next 36 months.
Therefore the price of scrap will dive menaing some ships will simply sit and rot as it will cost them more to scrap them !
Translating that into the pax market may mean that 2010 becomes ireelevant in terms of stopping ships sailing, it will be costs that factor more because those with lower costs can sell cruises at lower prices. For MG to sail she needs to charge a premium simply because she is so expensive to run.
Looking forward to seeing her with her Black hull and yellow funnel....
