Does anyone what type of sushi Carnival has? Is it the precooked stuff rolled with rice, or is it the authentic raw slab of fish on top of a clump of rice (nigiri, shashimi)?

Carnival Conquest had the rolled stuff with rice when I sailed on her in April.

Sorry, mec1. Wrong again!

If it's cooked or precooked, it won't be sushi or sashimi - that's got to be raw fish!

No, mec1 is right. Sashimi is fish on its own, no rice. Sushi is fish on rice.

Actually "Sushi" is the name of the rice... the way the rice is cooked and prepared. Whether the item served ON that rice is cooked or not is irrelevant. For example, you can get Salmon Skin, Eel, Shrimp, Egg and a number of other toppings on Nigiri Sushi (the little long ball) and it's still Sushi... If you simply put the rice in a bowl and serve the topping over it loosely, its still Sushi (Chirashi)...

In the case of Sashimi though, you're correct. It must be raw to be considered "Sashimi".

Either way its all delicious!

In Japan, Sushi Rice shall be boiled(cooked) with kelp and stired with Vinegar, Sugar and Salt.

Eggs or some foodstuffs are precooked before being putted on the top of Clasp(Nigiri) of Sushi Rice with wasabi which is a condiment traditionally served with raw fish (sushi and sashimi) and noodle (soba) dishes in Japan. The ground root-like rhizome pungently flavors many foods in Japanese cuisine and its bright green color adds color contrast.

Maki(rolled) sushi made by Sushi rice, Tuna, Cucumber or Precooked Kanpyo(dried gourd strips) and rolled by toasted laver now known as California rolls.

Sashimi means Sliced raw fish and decorated with Daikon(Japanese radish) in small pieces or some greens on the plate.

And George, they are absolutely delicious!

Just returned from Ishigaki (SuperStar Gemini) and went out for lunch with the Hotel Manager and Cruise Director. We had a wonderful meal of Sashimi, Sushi and Tepanyaki at a well known local restaurant.

Just great!

Regards,

Mike--in Taipei until Monday

Mike,

Did they cook in front of your table. At some Resatulants, they performed with knif whilst grilled for Tepanyaki.

No George they did not. Actually it was more of Japanese Bar-B-Que, cook it yourself over hot coals at the table. The main selling point being that this restaurant is right on the "ranch" where they breed the cattle for the extremely delicious and very tender Ishigaki Beef. Although my preference is still Kobe Beef.

Regards,

Mike--yeah, still here until Monday

Mike, it seemed that Korean Bar-B-Que(Yakiniku).
They cut a grilled meats by scissors.

Sushi prepares at the counter is the best however at the Buffet they mostly prepared in advance.

Anyway, getting back to the subject, I've never seen a very extensive list of Sushi available at the smallish walkup Sushi bars on Carnival ships, but this "extra" seems to have constantly changed over the years. It started as a kind of side thing on the "street" of some ships, serving only rolls, Cal roll, cucumber roll, etc. But on my most recent Carnival Cruise last year, they on occasion did have nigiri with shrimp, or egg, and I did see tuna, but they would quickly run out and revert to the rolls...

In any event, I've never seen anything sit-down and full service/selection. I don't think you can even get a beer there...

Well, thank you. That answered my question. It will probably be the "California Roll", with the only raw fish being tuna. I'll try to get there right when it starts! Thanks!
