It looks as though the Conservancy received an additional $100,000 in donations this week after a
national news blitz.

I hope the Conservancy has enough sense to use the recent donations to get the ship out of Philadelphia and up to Brooklyn. It makes zero sense to continue on the path they've been on for the past number of years. The only person profiting from this fiasco is the owner of the pier.

In the vernacular of the peasantry it's time to S--T or GET OFF THE POT!

Were it that simple ....

The cost of physically moving the ship is one consideration, the second is the insurance requirements when she moves, third is the amount of regulations that will be involved, then the permits needed to dock her in Brooklyn, assuming of course that the pier in Brooklyn is ready to take her (both structurally and depth wise) and then the need to establish new relationships with a maintenance organization (the guys in Phily have done a good job).

Separately from the mention of the recent financial results the Conservancy in its statement said that they continued to make progress with the partners for redevelopment and they continue to believe they are close to a final agreement.

These are all just interim steps to a long-term solution.

I agree. Moving the ship to Brooklyn is easier said than done. At this point I'd rather invest any remaining funds into getting the ship out of Philadelphia rather than presenting the landlord with another check.

I'd also like to see a full accounting on paper as to how much money was donated to the Conservancy and how it was spent.

This latest guy in Brooklyn who has the pier -- which by the by is a horrible location -- is estimating $2 million to move the ship to his dock which he says he would give rent free. It is not clear if that includes dredging and since it is such a polluted industrial area there's a real question if permits could ever be obtained to dredge in that area.

As for an accounting they have to file I believe reports to the Government as a charity which would be public record. But you could do a quick back of the envelop simply by figuring out when they took over multiple by the 60k a month and add in maybe the first year at more like 100k which I think was a number once bandied about when they were fully staffed.

The location in Brooklyn can't be any worse than where she currently is. As a matter of fact it's probably better since it won't be costing the owners sixty grand a month. At this point we are just Monday Morning Quarterbacking because we don't know all the facts. I believe the Conservancy needs a better plan at this late stage than just presenting the pier landlord another check for sixty grand.

That math simply does not work. If it is going to cost $2 million to move the ship -- assuming that includes dredging and all the permitting, etc. -- that amounts to over 30 months at the current cost of $60,000 per month. You also have to add in the cost of insurance to move the ship, etc. If you are talking an additional cost to dredge the amount increases exponentially.

The $60,000 is a total monthly carrying cost which is not only wharfage but also insurance, maintenance and maybe some Conservancy expenses. So the owner of the pier is not getting it all and even if he were 30 months is a long time. If the Conservancy can not conclude its current deals in less than 30 months ....

If she were moved the monthly expenses might go do without the pier but they are still going to need maintenance and insurance and possibly security depending on the location.

Rather than paying out a lot of money to move her it might be easier and cheaper to break her up where she is as her asbestos was removed several years ago.

Just put a coffer dam around her and then sell the bits as souveniers from a stall on the quayside.

I can see her becoming a wreck where she is, as the money dries up, and there is nothing left to pay any of the present costs of keeping her alongside and afloat.

It would be interesting to know just how much this doomed attempt to turn the ' ss United States ' in to a tourist attraction has cost but from what has been said no accounts are produced.

Her days as a ship are now numbered ! RIP
.
