So sad to hear of the passing of John Maxtone-Graham who died on Monday at the age of 85. Our thoughts go out to his wife and family.

As a teenager I was so excited to get a copy of "The Only Way to Cross" and immerse myself in its wonderful depiction of crossing the Atlantic during the glory days of ship travel.

I believe that this book and the follow up "Liners to the Sun" helped fuel a renewed interest in traveling by ship and the growth of the cruise industry.

Then, twenty-five years later, I had the pleasure or meeting him several times on various cruises and crossings and working with him to get the Ocean Liner Museum (OLM) onto the Internet.

While there was never an OLM building - the collections were housed in member's homes - each year exhibitions were held in various locations throughout Net York City so having a place on the Internet made perfect sense.

As the Editor of the Museum's quarterly newsletter, Ocean Liner Gazette, John would send me computer disc with the contents of each Gazette written in the ancient WordStar file format. I would then call him to discuss which articles he wanted to publish online.

In all my dealings with him he was always most gracious, friendly and helpful.

The OLM trustees decided to transfer the collection to South Street Seaport back in 2002.

The website hasn't been updated since then but it is still online.

In honor of his passing here is a link to the list of articles many of witch were written by John.

Here is wishing you a smooth crossing JMG.

I've read all of his books, he was a Master at his craft. There will never be another John Maxtone Graham.

He will be missed.

I also offer my condolences to his family and friends.

I was lucky enough to see him Lecture on-board the QE2, QM2 and in London.

He was one of the few modern day maritime 'superstars'.

We are lucky that we still have his books to buy.

My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Years ago, as a young ocean liner enthusiast, I looked up Mr. Maxtone-Graham's number in the Manhattan phone book a the local library. (The interweb wasn't even a idea yet.) I called his number because I had a question. I expected to get his office or at least a secretary. Mr. Maxtone-Graham answered the phone. He answered my question and we chatted about various ships for nearly an hour. He sent me a copy of his Cunard Line history book, signed. He was a wonderful story teller and writer and will be missed.

John Maxtone-Graham will leave a deep personal void in my life. I've had the distinct pleasure of knowing Mr. Maxtone-Graham and his wife for over 30 years. It was an honor to consider him a personal friend as a member and volunteer of the Ocean Liner Museum. He called upon me on several occasions for favors which were always graciously granted. I'll never forget the thrill and excitement of having him as house guests on one occasion.

This is very sad news. May he rest in peace.

Having some fond memories of Norway, I had an opportunity to get a copy of his book on that ship. I knew that it was highly thought of, but it surpassed even those expectations. The wealth of information and detail was most impressive, and I can see how he entirely justified his reputation and the extremely high regard in which he was held by everyone.
