Running until 2014? My understanding is that when P&O took over Cunard, Peter Ratcliffe, the pres wanted QE2 out of the fleet ASAP.
There were cracks in her bridge wings so she could not run full speed across the Atlantic.
I sailed her in 2003, and she was having mechanical issues. Aircon was dodgy, and brown water came out of my hot water taps.
2 voyages later she lost all power and was adrift for 4 hours.
A few years later she popped a sea chest, and would have sank if not for the fancy footwork of the crew.
I think she retired just at the right time before a major mishap occured.
SOLAS would have put her out to pasture with all of her dead end corridors and partial deck coverage passenger stairwells.

To be fair, we have had ships lose power twice, the Caribbean Princess and the Zuiderdam...Both right when my wife turned on her hairdryer !
But yes, a life running the north Atlantic is not an easy one and her time had come, it's just good to see her not going to the scrap yard yet.
The worst I saw at the end was we had a quick flareup in the funnel mid-ocean. The captain explained it was a carbon fire in the venting pipes and they put it down in a matter of minutes without any disruption.
They had to mend a number of structural issues especially in the superstructure with the aluminum but I don't believe any of that was limiting her performance. The cost of fuel was limiting her speed .... I was aboard more than once when the engineers told stories of being order not to waste so much fuel by speeding the ship up to "show off" such as flying past a competitor on the Atlantic one crossing.
There are some pictures around from the tandem winter crossing with the Queen Victoria where the QE2 looks like a toy boat standing on end showing just how stress she was withstanding and keeping "dry" compared to the Vickie who had a wet bow.
