Tuvalu is a typical register for these scrap ships. Others are St Vincent, Georgia and Sierra Leone, to name a few.

According to the AIS information, the ships name was changed back to ' Oceanic ' with effect from the 24th May 2012.

Her registry remains Panama.

According to the information of the person who went around the ship, flag of the stern had been changed and "The" has been removed from the neon sign on the top deck and bow.

What the name of the Flag that it's been changed to? Looks like preparations for the scrapyard.

I got sent a photo from a friend.
Design of the flag, there is the background of light blue, with Union Jack in the upper left corner and some stars.
Indeed, it is flag of Tuval.

This means a one way ticket to Alang. According to Peter Knergo, the Oceanic is scheduled to arrive at Alang in July. Around the same time as the SS Topaz in 2008. I guess this means that the ship won't get any interested buyers for a possible charter or a hotel ship option after all.

The new owner has only one thing on his mind and is not interested in any proposals otherwise. Maybe if you showed up with a lot of money you could change his mind but he is not seeking or responding to any inquires. This is his history as well and there might even be some things from the seller to discourage him from doing anything other than scrapping the Oceanic.

Is the owner the man who scrapped the SS Norway and the SS Maxim Gorkiy?

It's too bad that Home Lines was not able to refit the Oceanic with diesel engines like they wanted. If they were able to do so, then there is no doubt that she would still be sailing.

She is nearly 50 years old now. Also ships with diesel engines are usually well beyond their lifespan at that age - and Oceanic indeed suffered from a variety of problems 'recently'.

That is true. Although I wonder if the new owner of the ship is the one who scrapped the Saga Rose or the one who scrapped the SS Norway? Thus, the Oceanic is either going to China or India as it destination is Unknown, which could very well be India.

Hi Ernst

It is rather interesting that Chinese cruising companies have recently bought both the 1972 built ex ' Spirit of London ' , which is now 40 years old, and also the ex 'Song of Norway' which is now 42 years old.

It would seem that they consider the older diesel engine cruise ships a good buy !

Hi Neil,
I wondered why the Chinese Cruising Companies never considered the Saga Rose. They might have been able to make her SOLAS compliant given that the labor cost was very low. The same could have been applied to the former Mona Lisa as well.

Hi Donald

At the time she was for sale I heard there was a lot of major electrical problems with the ship.

Cassic International Cruises viewed her when she was at Gibraltar but made no offer.

I do not know whether these ships have been considered to be 'a good buy' and if so for which reason. Personally I would not even accept them as a gift.

A ship can not be operated indefinitely - at least not a reasonable costs - even in a low wage environment like China. Beside that, Saga Rose actually had quite a few technical problem.

Hi Maru,
Thanks for the update. It seems that Zhoushan has a lot of ship breaking facilities. It does appear that the destination could still change at any time.

Here is the following quote from Jonathan from The Liners List:

quote:

Updates from Asia

Hello Listers,

A couple of news updates from Asia.

The Oceanic has been reflagged in Tuvalu and will reportedly sail shortly for
Zhoushan in China. I fear the breakers beckon

Something appears to have gone wrong with the plan to use Louis's The Emerald as
a hotel ship in South Korea. The company organizing the hotel ship project will
instead be using the Ocean Emerald, a vessel built as the Nordic Prince and most
recently operated by a short-lived Mexican cruise venture.

Expocruise's website: www.expocruise.co.kr

Lloyds Register still lists The Emerald as being laid-up.

Jonathan

Farewell to another beautiful classic. I'm glad for all of the photo grabs of her going through the Panama Canal. I'm happy I got to sail onboard her when she was with Premier and have a few items that I bought. She served well.
