I recently borrowed a huge collection about the Belgian Congoboats from a friend and I 'm scanning most of it at the moment but I already found an unexpected treasure wich most people here will like very much.

The Constitution in Tenerife in 1962, the photos are taken by my friends father on a voyage from Belgium to Africa (Congo) on the Charlesville with a stop in Tenerife.

Enjoy

Jochen

Those are wonderful photos. Now give me that kind of ship and I'll cruise again. That is real find indeed.

Fab stuff Jochen!
Looks like she had a fairly rough crossing judging by the torn out paint at the bows.
I'll see if I can get you a copy of that book about Grace Kelly! The future Princess of Monaco came to Europe on one of them and there are some fab color pictures released by the Rainiers official photographer!

Sorry for the shameless plug but I did a book on these ships for American Hawaii called Saluting the Aloha Spirit. There are a bunch of great color photos of the sisters during their life in the book .... if I do say so myself.

I sell copies privately ... I have some originals left ... or it shows up from time to time on eBay.

Email me for details.

OK, Allan, I'll give you an unsolicited testimonial--I got the above book from you back in 1991 (20 years already!) and it is indeed a very nice volume. Saluting the 10th anniversary of American Hawaii, the text and rare photos highlight the history of the ships as well as behind-the-scenes views of life on board. Now that the ships and the Line are gone, this is an especially poignant book to own. Highly recommended!

Rich

Allan:

I'll also throw in a plug: I saw your book sitting on the shelf at a former employer's office and literally begged them to give it to me. After bugging the hell out of them for two weeks, they finally relented.
It's now proudly displayed on MY shelf.

In a word: excellent!

The late Princesse de Monaco, as Grace Kelly, did cross to Monaco on this ship, SS Constitution.

Thanks for the comments about my book. I had fun doing it and always wanted to go back and tell the "whole" story.

Grace Kelly's association, by the by, with the sister ships started when she was a model and did a shoot on the Indy. Of course she sailed to her wedding on the Connie but she and the Prince crossed one or more additional times on the ships. And of course she went on to re-christen the Connie for American Hawaii shortly before she died.

Off course this is all true but you 're missing the point, these are photos from a PERSONAL COLLECTION that nobody else has, I 'm the first to scan and publish them, I was not even looking for things like that, it was in a passenger collection from the Belgian CMB liners from the 1950's.

So it's not about the quality or the nature of the photos it's the personal touch that counts here.

I do not at all have the impression that your findings were not appreciated just because they triggered a nice discussion about these ships - I would actually consider that as compliment (and fortunately it was not at all a discussion about the technical quality of these pictures).
