Does anyone recall if the AMERIKANIS had a spiral staircase midship that would go down about 3 decks and end up outside the dining room? If so does anyone have a photo of that area? I thought she had one, I knew she had 2 dining rooms; the Silver Leaf and Silver Carte. I think we had our meals in the Silver Carte. Thank you for your kind responses.

I made several cruises in AMERIKANIS and can say that she did not have the spiral staircase you describe, nor does it appear on any deck plans.
Not sure what ship you are thinking of...

AMERIKANIS did have the Silverleaf and Silvercarte Dining Rooms but not the spiral staircase you refer to.

I took the AMERIKANIS to Bermuda several times from NYC and from Baltimore. I remember the two dining rooms, but not the staircase. She was a fun ship, very cozy with rather nice cabins. She did roll in heavy seas....don't think she had anti-roll fins. I took one cruise on the ATLANTIS which was also nice with very nice cabins. She was with Chandris a very short time. I think she was too thirsty, and entered service for Chandris about the time we had the fuel shortage in the early 70's.

Okay, that leaves only the DOLPHIN IV & EMERALD SEAS. For some reason I know I had recalled seeing a spiral staircase that was about midship; when you got to the bottom of the case, there were glass doors that lead to the dining room. It's so good to have you boys help me out, especially those who sailed on these ships more than I had the opportunity to do.

I've sailed aboard the Dolphin many times and there is no spiral staircase on that ship. there was just the main staircase in midships that took you up and down and one very small elevator.

NAL should be able to tell you if it was the Emerald Seas because that ship was previously Chandris' Atlantis and there was no big refit between her service as Atlantis and her service as Emerald Seas.

NAL: Chandris sold Atlantis in October 1972, about a year before the fuel shortages caused by the arab oil embargo started after the 1973 Yom Kippur war. But she was definitely a gas guzzler because of her weight since she was built as a troopship (General WP Richardson).

Did you ever sail in Epirotiki's ARGONAUT? She had a spiral staircase that I believe led to her dining room. Others with spiral stairs included CANBERRA and NORWAY as well as SAVARONA. But not DOLPHIN, AMERIKANIS or ATLANTIS.

I do not remember a spiral staircase on ATLANTIS either. Brian.....I think I sailed on ATLANTIS during the spring of '72. You are right about the dates of the fuel shortages in '73. I seem to remember Chandris just couldn't make a profit with ATLANTIS because of her thirst. After she left Chandris I think she was used mainly on short cruises to The Bahamas. Wasn't she also used very late in her career as a world cruiser for The World Cruise Co. or some such? I am not sure she ever made a cruise for them and if so, perhaps just one or two.

As EMERALD SEAS, this was reportedly the only time that ship ever made a profit for her owners. A short, 100-mile crossing to the Bahamas, spending a day and night tied up, helped to save on her heavy fuel costs.

Later in life she became the OCEAN EXPLORER I for the World Cruise Company, but her world cruise was cancelled due to mechanical difficulties and passengers flown home from Europe. The company acquired another ship which ended that cruise in Tahiti when the company folded, stranding nearly 200 passengers there!

Looks like I got my answers, thank you so much. I never got to sail the ARGONAUT, I do have photos of the only spiral staircase the NORWAY had and that case was in the Leeward Dining Room. All of you are very, very helpful. I do humbly appreciate it.

Folks, slightly wrong information on the World Cruise for Ocean Explorer. She finished the trip completely, returning to Greece per the plans. She was not taken up for the second trip and was replaced with the Don Juan. The company went bankrupt and the ship was arrested in Tahiti, creating a massive problem for those passengers and crew.

Deb.....Norwegian America Line had semi spiral staircases on at least 3 vessels. I visited the Bergensfjord as a child, and sailed on Sagafjord and Vistafjord....all of which had the semi-circular staircases. None ended in front of the dining rooms as the staircases were forward and the dining rooms more aft. I am not being much help, am I?

You're always a help to me too Dirk. I never got to sail on the SAGAFJORD & VISTAFJORD, I would have loved to have been onboard them.
