Photo was taken aboard MICHELANGELO upon their arrival in New York, 24 June 1965. It was the liner's second voyage.

Photo courtesy of Maurizio Eliseo, and it appears in his book "MICHELANGELO e RAFFAELLO."

Great image of the last GREAT movie star and of course the fantastic Richard Burton.

Dame Elizabeth also was a frequent Cunard passenger in the 1950s sailing on Queen Mary w/1st husband Nicky Hilton for their honeymoon trip to Europe. I believe they returned on QE.

She was also an Italia regular sailing sailing on Michelangelo and earlier Leonardo di Vinci to film Cleopatra in 1962. Interesting that even after the jet age began, Dame Elizabeth still crossed the Atlantic by liner at various times.

Her passing marks an end of a incredible era.

She also crossed on the Queens with husbands Michael Wilding, Mike Todd, and Richard Burton.

"La settimana Incom" newsreel

Naples, August 1960. Liz Taylor arrives in Italy for Cleopatra with her fourth husband Eddie Fisher. Among the passengers of the Leonardo da Vinci there is also the body builder Ed Fury who travels to Cinecittà to take advantage of the popularity of sword and sandal films.

1960? They didn't start production of Cleopatra in Italy until 1962, more than a year after the orignal production was shut down.

The production originally started at Sheperton Studios in Middlesex England in late 1960 with the River Thames serving as the Nile. At the time I lived in Walton-on-Thames in Surrey, just across the river from Sheperton and many of the sets were visible from the Surrey side of the river. When Elizabeth Taylor came down with pneumonia and almost died in February/March 1961, production was shut down for over a year. Eventually they decided to move the production to Rome and start from scratch: everything from the original production was scrapped and cast changes were made as well. Stephen Boyd was replaced by Ricahrd Burton and Peter Finch was replaced by Rex Harrison.

The River Thames in mid-winter being used as the Nile? It boggles the mind. By the time the english production was shut down the film was already over budget.

We were living in Rome at the time and I have some slides my dad took of the boats they built for the movie. I will try to find and scan.

My parents also had the opportunity to get to know Carol O'Connor who had a minor role in the movie. He had a son the same age as my brother and they were introduced by someone at the embassay.

Rome was a very interesting place at the time.
