It all started out so promising, Saga arrived quietly overnight and look very grand in the early morning dawn...

I then set out for the departure with keen anticipation, even if the weather had turned rather dull and overcast.
Expecting fire tugs, lots of horn blowing and the "spectacular send off" that Saga had put in their brochure, what followed was the lowest key departure that matched the weather, the only thing to differentiate from any other departure was the paying off penant flying from the mast...

Then, as she passed the Black Prince (the sale may have fallen through) and Oceana, there was no horn blowing whatsoever, even ehr paying off penant was lowered...

I was going to follow her down to Calshot from where the "Blades" aerobatic team were due to perform a display, but the light was fading fast, and I wouldn't have got any photos worthy of showing, so decided to come home!
Brgds,
Andrew

What's the deal? Is Saga Rose retired? Now what's in store for her?

Thanks for the lovely pictures.

Does anyone know what the celebration at Vigo will be?

I see that they are now advertising sections of the final cruise, on the Saga website. They were not offering this when they cancelled our North Africa cruise, to make way for this cruise. I assume that this can only be because the full cruise is not selling out.

They do not even seem to be making much of the fact that this is a record breaking ship, having sailed around the world more times than any other passenger ship in history. Most people I have spoken to, are unaware of this.

It is sad to see her go, especially with so little fanfare. Thanks for the pictures.

Graham.

Here in the UK Saga have made a big thing over her record breaking '44' WCs in press releases etc, but she hasn't actually done that number. It is on their website too, so people should have seen it. Likewise the final cruise segments have been on sale for a while with "limited" availability. Maybe it doesn't reach Canada? She sailed full anyway.

Lovely photos Oceansvoyager. I was caught on the hop & was at Marchwood when she pulled away. It was lovely to see the Paying Off Pennant billowing in the wind. Must have been raised early afternoon & I took some photos from both sides of the water. The last view I shall probably ever have of her was a rather poignant one imo:-

Thank you Andrew and Pam. Brings a lump to my throat when I think what may happen to her. Saga has taken such good care of her.....at least to appearances.

Quite agree Pam.
At least if was a good size, and not the half hearted effort Cunard did for the QE2!

I am glad to hear this. Thanks. No, I had not heard much fuss about it, even while sailing on her last month. I must say that I had not looked on the website for a while, having already booked. I thought though, that they might have let me know that they were going to be selling segments, when they cancelled our North Africa cruise to make way for this long final one. Maybe they did not decide this till later.

Thank you for sharing those wonderful photos. Poignant indeed!

Graham.

So how many World Cruises has she done?

(How's a world cruise defined - a complete circumnavigation?)

Yes, a circumnavigation. She has done possibly 39 or 40, open to discussion/argument One year she didn't do anything, 2 years were Grand Cruises rather than a circumnavigation and one year her World Cruise was aborted. This has been mentioned before and I don't think the real figure was agreed on, but however one looks at it she has not done 44.

Hi folks, I'm new here, but have been reading CT posts for several years. I thought I'd weigh in on this one...

Firstly, thank you Andrew and Pam for the great photos. I wish I could have been there.

According to my calculations, she completed a total of 28 circumnavigations in the following years:

Sagafjord: 1966, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994

Saga Rose: 1998-2009 (every year)

She did operate what could be classified as a 'grand cruise' (circle Pacific, etc) most other winters though, but as Pam mentioned the figure of 44 is incorrect.

Its impossible to believe a beautiful ship like this and in such perfect condition could be run up on the beach at Alang in a matter of weeks!

I am sure the ship is in good working order but perfect condition is maybe going a bit too far.

I agree. She is in excellent condition for her age.

Maxim Gorkiy is another example of a very well maintained ship that could have easily gone another 10-years that was run-up on the beach.

She is one of the last (if not the last) great beauties of the sea and when they are gone all we will have left are mostly ugly box-boats sailing.
