It wasn't. All White Star names ended with a "ic". I beleive what the person who wrote the site is thinking about is a book that was written I think 13 years prior to the Titanic inccident. In the book there is a ship named Titan that hits a iceburg on her maiden voyage and sinks taking most of the people on board with her because of a lack of life boats. Its weird because this book was written years before the Titanic and almost perfectly decribes what happened to Titanic. In the book the ship is decribed to be the biggest ship in the world (around Titanic's size), it is called unsinkable, it is supposted to be very luxurious, it think it was even decribed to look relatively similar. Its weird.

The book was called "Futility: The Wreck of the Titan" by Morgan Roberson and it was published in 1898. It was really only a terribly written short story written by an ex-seaman who should have stuck to being a seaman since his writing skills were somewhat lacking. (Yes, I have a copy).

RE: the name Titan, I seem to recall that the owners of Whitestar had indeed considered the name Titan for the ship, but because their ship names all ended in "ic" they were forced to create a NEW name or word, TITANIC. Was the word or name Titanic ever used before....other than Teutonic, I think a new word was created for the Titanic of 1912.
Barry, the word 'titanic' was not created by White Star Line, it's been part of the English language for a lot longer than that! It means something having great power, magnitude, or force. Comes from the Greek 'titanikos.'
