Rather depressing with all the neglect and vanalism. But putting all that aside , a fasinating look at ocean liner history. Thanks for sharing the photos NP.

That place would make a great Maritime Museum!
Great pictures!

In the second one it looks like there is a funnel way in the distance. Looks like a NCL funnel.

Do you know what that is?

Thank you for the pictures NP. Interesting to see the old signs still in place even if the place is so neglected.

Cunard Fan I expect that is LD Lines' Norman Spirit. Nice photo here with info on Fakta om Fartyg.

What a weird idea to go to Le Havre !!!
I don't know if there are people from Le Havre who sometimes check this board, but if it's the case we won't be friend... Le Havre is widely considered as the ugliest city of France, her ugliness being so amazing that the UNESCO decided to make it a World heritage site ("outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates (a) significant stage(s) in human history").

Anyway, I wonder why they didn't do it like in Cherbourg : restore the transatlantic terminal, make it a museum and the city cruise terminal. I think it's a success in Cherbourg, so why not in Le Havre which have a pretty decent number of cruise calls (Le Havre/Paris stuff) ?

I made a 'pilgrimage' to Le Havre a few years ago while our CARONIA was docked at Honfleur for two days. Most of the city was rebuilt after heavy bombardment in WWII, so it has little charm, but there is a great maritime museum sponsored by the contemporary 'French Lines.' One can see lots of models, memorabilia, an entire room of panelling and fittings from the FRANCE of 1912, and there is an excellent bookshop there as well.

Update: the former French Line terminal will be destroyed this year ,according to a recent decision of Le Havre port authority. 2008 in definitively not a good year fort the last remnents of the french transatlantic pride....

The terminal today...

And during more glorious days:

(Note some pannels from the Normandie Smocking Room in display).

And for french speaking friends (and the others) a nice video from the local TV about this amazing building:

Sad, but inevitable.

It's interesting how Cruise Terminal buildings used to match the splendour of the great Ocean Liners themselves.

Although modern ships hardly have the same quality of decor of the great Ocean Liners, modern Cruise Terminal buildings are often boring sheds and do not even begin to compete with the modern ships decor.

They should have kept the Southampton Ocean Terminal instead of replacing it with that QEII concrete thing!

Although I loathe Costa, i do think the two Palocrocieres in Savona and Barcelona are excellent. I also like Canada Place in Vancouver and the Disney Terminal in Port Canaveral.

Is the terminal easy to get to and into from where modern day ships dock? I am headed there on QV in May and would love to see this site. Thanks

Wasn't that Normandie panel later used a/b Ile-de-France? I think it was in the smoking room.

The ex transat terminal is not really far from the new cruise one:

<a href="http://img219.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lehavreon1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/6714/lehavreon1.th.jpg" border="0" alt="Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://img604.imageshack.us/content.php?page=blogpost&files=img219/6714/lehavreon1.jpg" title="QuickPost"><img src="http://imageshack.us/img/butansn.png" alt="QuickPost" border="0"></a> Quickpost this image to Myspace, Digg, Facebook, and others!

You have only one way via the former car access. Sadly sometimes it's closed by a big fence (well i'ts normally forbidden), but sometimes not, so like me you can take your chance...
The building is very very neglected and you must find your way between rusten railings and tons of dead birds.

About the normandie's pannels, the one displayed in the 1949 Ile's smock room was from the big door btw Normandie's Grand salon and the smocking room.

The destruction of the former French Line terminal started in January....

http://www.marine-marchande.net/Jourlejour/E-000-1000/586-gare_maritime_Havre.jpg

The former transatlantic terminal (who hosted the other lines like Cunard, USL and HAL) is still there, in pristine condition, but his future seems to be quite uncertain as the area will be a new container zone...

I would agree with all the above, and add the Royal Caribbean and new Carnival terminals in Miami to the "best" list as well.

When I docked last year on QV I walked over to the French Line terminal, squeezed through some fencing and got right inside. Very creepy, very surreal. Very neglected, but you could picture everything. Even the timetable on the wall and the signs to the ships. Of course you have to wade through thousands of dead skeletal pigeons (ie: don't wear flip flops!)

I could imagine how lovely it used to be...

Also, amazing graffiti! if anyone is into graffiti art, some neat stuff inside...

Sad to see
but perhaps good for Le havre, why did wait the Port Authority so long ? did they hope to revive the terminal ?

Is there no chance of restoring the other terminal, and make it act again as a passenger terminal, "in the style of the grand liners", Le Havre is often used as a cruise stop aka "Paris" ?

J
