I was onboard Canberra at the time. I did take a lot of photos but have since lost them with all the movning around i have done in recent years.
I remember in the morning listening to a radio conversation between QEII and the U.S. carrier Geaorge Washington (think it was that one) anyway the GW was turning on her anchor to 'get into line' with all the other vessels. at about half way round they requested to the QEII that she move forward to allow the carrier room, the bridge of the QEII in a very official manner responded by saying that they were the QEII and if anyone were to move it woudl not be them. the requests and refusals went back and forth a few times until the carrier informed QEII they should move at an instant as the GW was a nuclear powered aircraft carrier and would be removing the stern section of the QEII should they fail to comply. the speed at which the QEII finally moved was quite impressive.
the shame of the day was as Canberra and QEII left the Solent the original plan was for the vessels to slow down and stay close in the channel along with many warships while a service was held on deck and Lancaster bomber flew over dropping poppies out of the bomb bay doors. for some reason the QEII felt the need to show off her speed to us P&O people and shot across at 28 knots. Canberra could only manage about 23.5 knots at that time as one of the main alternators was dismantled for rewinding. we did try to keep up but really we had no chance.
The Lancaster dropping the poppies was very impressive. Paper poppies could be found in the engineroom and ventilation ducts for months
Shame QE2 did not slow down for Canberra, miffed after the morning's exercise maybe Lovely to see such a collection together in one place, but yes sad as to the reason why.
So one of the above three for sure.
A certitude, that's not the HERALD (A138) which is an improved version of the HECLA class, slightly modified.
